Differing Levels of Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia can produce a spectrum of pro-inflammatory and pro-atherothrombotic changes. To date no studies appear to have investigated the effects of differing levels of hypoglycemia on the vasculature and pro-atherothrombotic balance during hypoglycemia in healthy man. The specific aim of our study will be to determine the effects of differing levels of hypoglycemia on in-vivo vascular biologic mechanisms in a healthy population.

Effect of Fasting on Hypoglycemic Counterregulation in Type 1 Diabetes

Iatrogenic hypoglycemia is still considered to be the number one barrier to effective glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). In a previous study, it was observed in people without diabetes that fasting can be detrimental to the hormonal and hepatic responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. In the experiments described herein, the impact fasting has on hypoglycemic counterregulation in people with T1D will be determined.

To prospectively determine the burden of hypoglycemia (minutes spent below 70 mg/dl per day, measured by continuous glucose monitor (CGM)) among residents of long term care facilities (LTC) with a diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes including key clinical subgroups (living in skilled nursing facility (SNF) or nursing home (NH), on different hypoglycemic medications).

Impact of MEnstruation on Glycemic Response and Exercise In Females With Type 1 Diabetes

The objectives of this study are to examine how sex hormones (use of hormonal birth control, menstrual cycle phase) impact glycemic control among women with type 1 diabetes (T1D), and to test adjustments to insulin dosing and food intake to ameliorate cycle-related glycemic variability. A secondary aim is to examine how the menstrual cycle and use of hormonal birth control impact patient-reported outcomes and glycemic responses to physical activity.
