Aging and the Mitochondrial Response to Exercise Training, Measured by Noninvasive 31P Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
Recruiting
The goal of the study is to determine whether aerobic or resistant exercise can improve in vivo mitochondrial capacity of skeletal muscle cells similarly in healthy younger, middle aged and older adults. This confers long-term changes in this tissue which in-turn contribute to improved metabolic health and functional capacity through epigenetic regulation of novel exercise response genes.

Reducing Sedentary Time in Patients With Cardiovascular Disease
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to develop and test a 12-week sedentary behavior reduction intervention ("Sit Less" program) for patients with cardiovascular disease. The program aims to reduce and break sitting times among this population using an objective activity monitor and mHealth. The investigators will test the program to help cardiovascular disease patients break up sitting time, reduce daily sitting time, and move more. The investigators will also study whether the program leads to improv... Read More

Exploring Virtual Reality Adventure Training Exergaming
Recruiting
The current project aims to design and implement an 8-week Virtual Reality Adventure Therapy Exergaming (V-RATE) intervention focused on women veterans. A randomized controlled trial using a repeated measure design with a 1-month follow-up assessment will be employed to examine effects on physical and mental health outcomes.

Goal Setting to Promote Physical Activity Adherence in Midlife Adults
Recruiting
Engaging in regular physical activity during midlife is a key lifestyle behavior associated with reduced risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). Yet nearly half of midlife adults (48%) do not meet national physical activity guidelines. The purpose of this mechanistic trial is to identify effective goal setting techniques to enhance psychosocial processes of self-regulation for the successful promotion of PA and adherence to national PA guidelines among midlife adults, with... Determining How Indoor Lighting Affects the Brain Health of Older Adults
Recruiting
The goal of this randomized, cross-over, single-site trial followed by an exploratory third intervention is to understand how indoor lighting affects different measures of brain health in older adults living in independent living residences. This is a community based study occurring in a local senior living facility. The main question this study aims to answer is:
- How does the quality of ambient indoor lighting an older adult is exposed to affect measures of brain health, such as sleep qualit... Read More

Childhood Obesity Treatment Designed for Low Income and Hispanic Families
Recruiting
This study is a type-1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation RCT comparing a novel family-inclusive childhood obesity treatment program, the "Healthy Living Program" (HeLP), to a protocol that enhances usual primary care to deliver Recommended Treatment of Obesity in Primary Care (RTOP). Children with obesity and their families will be referred to the study by primary care providers and randomized to HeLP or RTOP. The clinical setting is a practice-based research network serving majority Hispanic... Read More

Physical Activity, Alzheimer's Disease and Cognition Relative to APOE Genotype
Recruiting
Physical activity and Alzheimer's disease (PAAD-2) is a randomized control trial that will assess the effects of exercise on middle-aged (40-65 years) cognitively normal adults who have a heightened risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to family history (FH+). The investigators will also assess the extent to which this effect is moderated by apolipoprotein epsilon-4 (APOE4) carrier status, and will gather critical new experimental evidence on the use of physical activity to improve cognitive per... Using a mHealth Intervention to Promote Physical Activity in Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation Clients
Recruiting
In this study, we will implement a pilot project of using activity tracker (i.e., Fitbit) with phase III CR clients. The study will record the clients' daily steps and sleep patterns for 8 consecutive weeks in natural settings. Two specific aims are identified for this project:
Develop an intervention protocol using mHealth to promote Phase III CR clients' self-monitoring of PA.
Examine the efficacy of the intervention on clients' PA, sleep patterns, functional capacity and QoL.

Managing Pain and Cognitions in Older Adults With Early Cognitive Decline and Chronic Pain
Recruiting
The investigators aim to conduct a fully powered randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of two symptom management programs for older adults with early cognitive decline (either self-reported or confirmed by testing) and chronic pain, Active Brains 1 and Active Brains 2. The investigators will assess how each program may help in improving multimodal physical, cognitive and emotional function. The investigators will also assess whether improvements in outcomes from the two programs ar... Read More
