This clinical trial is studying how well surgery and/or combination chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy or observation only work in treating young patients with newly diagnosed stage I or stage II lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin disease (LPHD). Surgery may be an effective treatment for LPHD. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone, and cyclophosphamide, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) with or without radiation therapy may kill more cancer cells. Read Less

This trial examined the outcome benefit to patients of adding a new chemotherapy drug combination to the established treatment approach for patients with extracranial Ewing sarcoma, that had not spread from the primary site to other places in the body. The trial randomly assigned patients at the time of study entry to receive established standard treatment with the following 5-drugs: vincristine sulfate, doxorubicin hydrochloride, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide and etoposide. After treatment, stem cells are collected from the patient's blood and stored. More chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given to prepare the bone marrow for the stem cell transplant. Lestaurtinib may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth.
