The purpose of the trial is to study the clinical and biological effects of metformin in combination with standard systemic chemotherapy in a disease (relapsed ALL) that has a dismal outcome, as well as to do a dose escalation study to find the Maximum Tolerated Dose (MTD) of metformin in conjunction with ALL therapy. There have also been analysis of patients enrolled on trials who were diabetics on metformin and their outcome was better than patients on the same trial that were not on metformin as their antihyperglycemic. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Giving the drugs in different combinations may kill more cancer cells. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage cancer cells. The purpose of this study is to determine if Thalidomide + Dexamethasone or DOXIL (doxorubicin HCl liposome injection) + Thalidomide + Dexamethasone is more effective in treating newly diagnosed patients with multiple myeloma. This is an initial clinical trial evaluating whether different doses of iontophoresis for delivery of dexamethasone phosphate can be tolerated by eyes of patients with non-infections, non-necrotizing scleritis. A secondary goal is to get preliminary information about whether the treatment is likely to be an effective treatment for scleritis. Infants with birth weight 501g to 1000g and mechanically ventilated before 12 hours were randomly assigned to minimal ventilation (partial pressure of carbon dioxide \[PCO(2)\] target \>52 mm Hg) or routine ventilation (PCO(2) target \<48 mm Hg) and a tapered dexamethasone course or saline placebo for 10 days, using a 2 x 2 factorial design. This study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of different dosages and administration schedules of an investigational agent administered over 3 days when added to standard therapy used in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. Subjects will be asked to complete daily diaries while on study medication. In addition subjects will be required to return to the investigational site several times during the course of the study for follow up safety assessments which may include blood samples for hematology and chemistry evaluations as well as physical exams.
