Tipifarnib may stop the growth of breast cancer by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth and by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving tipifarnib together with combination chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of tipifarnib when given together with combination chemotherapy and to see how well they work in treating patients with stage II or stage III breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of albumin-bound paclitaxel plus gemcitabine in patients with advanced squamous cell lung cancers. The investigators would like to determine the percentage of patients with squamous cell lung cancers who experience shrinkage of their tumors following treatment with this regimen. This combination of drugs is not a standard therapy for patients with squamous cell lung cancers. RATIONALE: Androgens can stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells. Drugs such as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist, flutamide, and bicalutamide may stop the adrenal glands from producing androgens. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining hormone therapy with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy given at the same time as hormone therapy is more effective than chemotherapy given after hormone therapy in treating prostate cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of chemotherapy given at the same time as hormone therapy with that of chemotherapy given after hormone therapy in treating patients who have prostate cancer.
