Paclitaxel Treatment Options in Minnesota

This randomized, 3-arm, multicenter, phase III study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) with pertuzumab or trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) with pertuzumab-placebo (blinded for pertuzumab), versus the combination of trastuzumab (Herceptin) plus taxane (docetaxel or paclitaxel) in participants with HER2-positive progressive or recurrent locally advanced or previously untreated metastatic breast cancer. This is a standard of care treatment guideline for high risk or relapsed solid tumors or CNS tumors consisting of a busulfan, melphalan, thiotepa conditioning (for solid tumors) or carboplatin and thiotepa conditioning (for CNS tumors) followed by an autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplant. For solid tumors, if appropriate, disease specific radiation therapy at day +60. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Monoclonal antibodies, such as trastuzumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread.
