RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as ABI-007(Nab-Paclitaxel((Nanoparticle Albumin Bound)-Paclitaxel)) and gemcitabine, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. This is a phase III randomized study comparing induction treatments of Gemcitabine and Carboplatin versus Paclitaxel and Carboplatin, with or without consolidation therapy for patients that do not have any evidence of disease after completion of six cycles of induction therapy. Eligible patients will be randomized in a ratio of 2:1 to receive either chemotherapy (a taxane and a platinum compound) plus CPG 7909 Injection or chemotherapy alone. Protocol therapy will be administered until disease progression or intolerable toxicity.
