The purpose of this study is to determine if 2 doses of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) followed by 1 dose of Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPV) in HIV-infected children on anti-HIV therapy is helpful and safe in fighting pneumococcal infections in this group of children. This study will also look at the protection provided by childhood vaccination against measles, pertussis, and hepatitis B virus. Pneumococcal infections are the most common AIDS-related infection in HIV-infected children. PCV may help reduce the chances of HIV-infected children getting pneumococcal infections. This study will look at whether pneumococcal vaccines are safe and effective in HIV-infected children receiving HAART. It will look at whether HIV-infected children are protected by childhood vaccines received previously and if more doses are safe and improve protection. Read Less

With aging the immune system gets weaker. This makes older adults more susceptible to influenza (flu). Vaccinations help to prevent infection from the flu virus, however the immune system of older adults do not respond as well to vaccines compared to young adults and thus, aren't as well protected from the complications from the flu. This research is being done to determine if Metformin, an FDA-approved diabetes medication, is effective at enhancing immune responses to flu vaccine in older men and women. Participants will be randomly assigned to either metformin or placebo treatment for a total of 22 weeks. Participants will be vaccinated with high-dose flu vaccine after 12 weeks of treatment. This study is evaluating the safety and immunogenicity of GSK Biologicals' Hib-MenCY-TT vaccine compared to a control group receiving licensed Hib conjugate vaccine, each administered at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, and compared to licensed meningococcal serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135 polysaccharide vaccine administered at 3 to 5 years of age. The safety and immunogenicity of a booster dose of Hib-MenCY-TT vaccine will be compared to a booster dose of licensed Hib conjugate vaccine, each administered at 12 to 15 months of age.
