Assessment of Colostomy Bags with an Active Chamber Filter System and Incidence of Filter-Related Complication
Recruiting
This 3-way crossover study aims to evaluate whether colostomy bags with an active chamber filter system reduce the incidence of filter-related complications, such as ballooning and pancaking, help neutralise odour, and minimise faecal leakage through the filter compared to colostomy bags with a protective filter

The Remote Study: Investigating the Effects or Online Exercise on Quality of Life in Men With Prostate Cancer
Recruiting
Currently, there are few opportunities for patients with cancer to have individual exercise guidance, and this has further been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, during the pandemic the use of virtual/remote platforms has been crucial in delivering care to cancer patients. The investigators think that remote exercise training may also offer a solution to support positive change in prostate cancer patients. As a result, the investigators have developed a remote/online exercise programme... Read More

PROton Versus Photon Therapy for Esophageal Cancer - a Trimodality Strategy
Recruiting
The PROTECT trial will test the hypothesis that proton (PT) -enabled radiation dose reductions to sensitive, normal tissues will result in lower rates of treatment-related pulmonary complications in esophageal cancer compared to standard photon therapy (XT).

Safety and Efficacy of VB10.16 and Pembrolizumab in Patients with Head-Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Recruiting
This is a multi-center study in patients with un-resectable Recurrent or Metastatic HPV16-positive oropharyngeal Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC). The trial is designed to investigate VB10.16, an investigational therapeutic DNA vaccine in combination with another medicine, pembrolizumab, which is the standard of care for patients with previously untreated metastatic or resectable recurrent PD-L1 positive HNSCC. The study is divided in 2 parts: a phase 1, dose escalation part, testin... Read More

National Emergency Bariatric Surgery Audit
Recruiting
The goal of this observational study is to investigate the incidence, management, and outcomes of complications following bariatric surgery in patients in the United Kingdom. The main questions it aims to answer are: * What is the prevalence of unplanned interventions due to complications following bariatric surgery in the UK? * What are the current practices for managing these complications, and how do they impact patient outcomes? Participants will: Be identified from hospitals treating pat... Read More

Investigating the Impact of the Seaweed Derived Food Additive, Carrageenan, on the Human Gut Microbiome
Recruiting
The goal of this study is to investigate whether a seaweed derived food additive, carrageenan, has an impact on the human gut microbiome in vivo. The primary purpose is to assess whether consumption of a carrageenan containing product for 4 weeks can alter the bacterial composition of the gut microbiome in healthy individuals and whether the addition of a prebiotic fibre, inulin, to the product has an enhanced beneficial impact of the gut composition. The main questions to answer are: Does the... Read More

Vitamin D and Health Status of British African-Caribbean Women
Recruiting
Vitamin D deficiency remains a global public health issue (Wilson 2017). In the United Kingdom (UK). There is a lack of research looking at vitamin D status of the British African-Caribbean population. This population is particularly at risk to vitamin D deficiency due to possessing a skin type which hinders the production of vitamin D in the skin. Further, due to the geographical location of the UK, there is reduced ability to produce vitamin D due to the low sun exposure (Libon 2013 ). Our mai... Read More

ARDS in Children and ECMO Initiation Strategies Impact on Neurodevelopment (ASCEND)
Recruiting
ASCEND researchers are partnering with families of children who receive extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after a sudden failure of breathing named pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS). ECMO is a life support technology that uses an artificial lung outside of the body to do the lung's work. ASCEND has two objectives. The first objective is to learn more about children's abilities and quality of life among ECMO-supported children in the year after they leave the pediatr... Read More

Development and Validation of a New Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease NUTrition Risk Score (PIBD-NUTS)
Recruiting
Children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including both Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) can be at high risk of developing malnutrition due to the nature of their condition. It is also believed that some children with IBD, in need of nutritional care, are not identified quickly by their healthcare professionals. This may negatively affect their nutrition, disease progression and general well-being. Hence, it has been proposed that nutritional screening tools or scores (NSTs... Read More

Virtual Ward-Assisted Very earLy dIschArge of Low-rIsk STEMI patieNTs: the VALIANT-STEMI Trial
Recruiting
Observational studies have suggested that early discharge (24hrs with follow up virtually by telephone) of patients who are low risk and have had successful treatment following ST elevation myocardial infarction is safe. This has not been tested in a randomised controlled trial. In this trial the study team propose to identify low risk patients and randomise them to usual care or early discharge and follow up virtually by telephone. The primary endpoint would be readmission to hospital or all ca... Read More

The 8x5 Diet for Bile Acid Diarrhoea: A Feasibility Randomised Controlled Trial
Recruiting
Bile acid diarrhoea is a common cause of chronic watery diarrhoea. Treatment is life-long medication. However, about 50% of people have ongoing, bothersome diarrhoea. Findings from recent research on diet therapies and food intolerances have been used to develop a healthy dietary pattern called The 8x5 Diet. We will test the practicalities of conducting a randomised controlled trial of this dietary intervention.

Influence of NEP Inhibition on Vascular Leak and Inflammation (NEPi-INFLAMMATION)
Recruiting
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a severe type of lung injury that affects 10% of patients admitted to Intensive Care Units worldwide, with an unacceptably high mortality of up to 48% in those with the most severe form of the condition. It is a complex and poorly understood syndrome that results in progressive failure of the lungs. Crucially, the inflamed lungs allow fluid to leak from the circulation into the airspace, so that patients' lungs fill with fluid - "drowning from the in... Read More
