Very-low carbohydrate ketogenic diets can dramatically increase blood cholesterol levels, particularly in normal-weight people, for reasons that are not well understood. This study will enroll normal-weight adults, will identify "responders" who develop high cholesterol on a ketogenic diet, and will measure rates of production and removal of certain types of cholesterol-carrying particles called lipoproteins in responders. The results will clarify the mechanism by which a ketogenic diet can cause high cholesterol in certain susceptible people. Read Less

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies, which are proteins in the blood that interfere with the body's ability to perform normal blood clotting. Clinical problems associated with antiphospholipid antibodies include an increased risk for the formation of blood clots in the lungs or deep veins of the legs, stroke, heart attack, and recurrent miscarriages. It is possible that some people with APS have a genetic predisposition for developing the syndrome. This study will use a genetic strategy to identify potential inherited risk factors for the development of APS by recruiting people with APS who have family members also affected by the syndrome or by another autoimmune disorder, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. This study aims to collect demographic and medical information including detailed family history of cancer of children and adolescents with adrenocortical tumors in order to learn more about the clinical and epidemiological aspects, treatment modalities, and outcome of patients with this rare disease, worldwide. In addition, investigators at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (SJCRH) plan to perform molecular studies of tumor cells aimed to clarify the role of the TP53 gene and other genetic pathways in these tumors.
