Rates of heavy drinking and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) are increasing in women, but research on alcohol-related harms in women - including alcohol's impact on sleep - has been minimal. Numerous studies in men show that alcohol impairs sleep, and preliminary evidence suggests that women may be even more sensitive to alcohol-disrupted sleep due to their sex hormones, which fluctuate across both their menstrual cycles and their reproductive lifespans. This study will investigate the influence of sex, menstrual cycle phase, and sex hormones on alcohol-disrupted sleep in adults ages 21-45. Healthy women and men will complete two sets of placebo-controlled lab sessions, during the mid-follicular and late luteal phases of female participants' menstrual cycles. During these sessions, participants will receive a dose of alcohol or a placebo (saline) and they will then be monitored (with polysomnography) while they sleep. At-home sleep and alcohol use will also be measured through actigraphy, daily sleep and wake diaries, and alcohol wrist sensors. Investigators hypothesize that women will show greater disruption of sleep following alcohol use or administration than men, and that alcohol-disrupted sleep will be more pronounced in the late luteal phase compared to the mid-follicular phase. Investigators also expect that estradiol will be negatively associated with alcohol-disrupted sleep, whereas progesterone will be positively associated with alcohol-disrupted sleep. Read Less

This trial will be performed as a three-part dose escalating clinical trial where Parts 1 is open label and Parts 2 and 3 are randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled. The trial is intended to determine the safety and tolerability and assess the preliminary efficacy of briquilimab in adult participants with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), who remain symptomatic despite treatment with H1 antihistamines and omalizumab. This is a quantifiable study evaluating the ability of a mixed reality (MR), immersive simulation experience to evoke empathy in anesthesiology trainees. Quantitative methodologies will be employed using standardized questionnaires including the The Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy for Health Professions Students, (HP-version). Trainees will assess their preliminary, baseline empathy using the Jefferson Scale and after the simulation and debrief, will reassess empathy scores, once again using the Jefferson Scale. Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases are a health burden for approximately seven percent of the population of Western nations. Preliminary data suggest variations in ethnic identity and/or geography influence discrimination experiences and inflammatory response trends. This study investigates how geography, ethnicity, and laboratory manipulation of discrimination experiences affect immune cell function and genomic regulation. Flow cytometry and immune cell stimulation will test monocytes collected from peripheral blood for functional effects. Next-generation transcriptomics and epigenomics will assess genomic and epigenetic mechanisms. The hypothesis is that geography, self-identified race, and ethnicity, interacting with laboratory discrimination conditions during the virtual ballgame Cyberball™, significantly affect immune cell function through genomic and epigenetic mechanisms, with perceived discrimination as a moderating factor on the immune outcomes. The transdisciplinary nature of the proposed study aims to provide valuable insights into differential susceptibility to immune-mediated inflammatory diseases across diverse populations. Medications used to relax the muscles are used during surgery. The amount of muscle relaxation can monitored with devices that stimulate a specific nerve and evaluate the muscle response. The response to, and recovery from, medications that relax the muscles are best described for a nerve in the arm called the ulnar nerve. The investigators believe that other nerves in the arm, such as the median nerve, could be used to monitor the amount of muscle relaxation. The purpose of this study is to compare the muscle response at two different nerve sites after giving medications to relax the muscles. This study is going to measure the depth of muscle relaxation during surgery at two different sites. The muscle response to stimulation of the ulnar nerve (located in the arm) will be compared to the muscle response to stimulation of the median nerve (also located in the arm). Read Less
