AvoCog - the Effect of Daily Avocado Intake on Cognitive Function in Older Adults
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to determine if adding avocados to the diet of impacts cognition in 70 older adults, age 65-85, without dementia. We will test for change in functional MRI, cognitive performance, and brain blood flow. Intervention group participants will be asked to consume 1 avocado per day for 12 weeks. Participants in the control group will be asked to continue their normal intake for 12 weeks. Throughout the study, participants will be asked to perform cognitive tests, MRI... Read More

Targeting Chronic Stress for Reducing Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer
Recruiting
Many neighborhoods in Chicago experience daily exposure to stressors including economic inopportunity and violent crime in public spaces. There is mounting evidence that chronic psychosocial stress can facilitate carcinogenesis by modulating the gut microbiome and immune system. The proposed research aims to study the practice of mindfulness to mitigate CPS and reduce colorectal cancer risk factors among Black American women at elevated risk.

NonNarcotic Pain Control in Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy of Elbow
Recruiting
This study is a double-blind, randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of oral acetaminophen, diclofenac, and tramadol in reducing the consumption of narcotic doses (primary outcome) and minimizing patients' exposure to narcotics (secondary outcome) following an ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle tenotomy procedure on the lateral elbow.

Passive Leg Raise and Mini-fluid Challenge Effect on Various Cardiac Output Surrogates for Fluid Responsiveness
Recruiting
In the critically ill population, fluid administration in an unstable patient is perhaps the most common intervention that is performed. Uncorrected hypovolemia with inappropriate vasopressors lead to organ hypoperfusion where as overzealous fluid administration especially in ARDS (Adult respiratory distress syndrome) can increase mortality. It has been estimated that only 50% of hemodynamically unstable critically ill patients are volume responsive, hence dynamic assessment of preload responsiv... Read More

Ventilatory Parameters in Predicting Outcomes in ARDS Patients
Recruiting
This is a single-centre prospective observational study aimed to determine if Pocc (occlusion pressure at 100 msec), TCe ( Expiratory time constant ), Mechanical Stress power, Ventilatory ratio and C20/Cdyn would predict outcomes in patients with moderately severe ARDS (Acute respiratory distress syndrome), who are on mechanical ventilation

Effectiveness and Tolerability of Zavegepant for Acute Migraine Treatment Among Those Using CGRP Targeting Preventive Medications
Recruiting
Zavegepant (Zavzpret) is approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in the US. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and tolerability of zavegepant for the acute treatment of migraine attacks amongst participants who are using calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) migraine preventive treatments.

Posterior Cingulate Cortex and Executive Control of Episodic Memory
Recruiting
This project will use intracranial recordings and stimulation of the human brain to understand the unique contributions of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) to episodic memory behavior. The goal is to test how distinct subregions of the PCC differentially contribute to memory-based decisions (e.g., have I seen this picture before?). The ability to perform invasive studies of the human brain is through routine clinical monitoring of brain activity which occurs during the neurosurgical treatmen... Read More

Reaching Rural Veterans: Applying Mind-Body Skills for Pain Using a Whole Health Telehealth Intervention - UG3 Pilot
Recruiting
This project addresses the significant challenge of providing evidence-based non-pharmacologic pain management to rural-dwelling Veterans in the VA healthcare system who have chronic pain. For this preparatory phase (UG3) the investigators will conduct a pilot study of 40 rural VA patients with chronic pain to assess the feasibility of delivering RAMP (experimental intervention for the UH3 trial) in terms of recruitment and engagement, intervention fidelity and adherence, data collection, and ot...
