Maternal Stress and Blood Sugar Metabolization
Recruiting
During pregnancy, gestational diabetes increases the risk of complications and adverse outcomes for mother and child, however about 50% of gestational diabetes cases are diagnosed without a known risk factor present. This project uses both a large sample retrospective study, and a prospective study to help us understand the mechanisms by which mental health and stress impact glucose metabolization during pregnancy and delineate their contribution to gestational diabetes and racial disparities. Classical Guitar for Parkinson's Disease
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to understand if training Parkinson's disease patients in classical guitar will improve motor function, mood, and quality of life. While medication has been found to be effective for many Parkinson's disease patients, many patients still have symptoms. Previous studies have found that music and rhythm-based activities can help Parkinson's disease symptoms. A previous study looked at the effect of playing classical guitar on Parkinson's disease symptoms. They found po... Read More

A New Securement Method for External Tunneled Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD)
Recruiting
An external tunneled central venous access device (CVAD) is a small plastic tube that is tunneled under the skin into a major vein for long-term use (Figure 1). Patients who require a tunneled CVAD are some of the sickest patients we encounter and include oncology, hematology, and gastrointestinal (intestinal failure) patients. These patients are heavily reliant on their tunneled CVAD, which can be a lifeline for long-term administration of chemotherapeutics, IV medications, blood product transf... Read More

Prevalence of Humoral Dysfunction in Pts With Frequent Exacerbations of COPD, and the Effect of SCIgR for Prevention
Recruiting
To examine the prevalence of humoral immunodeficiency in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) by evaluating both immunoglobulin levels and vaccine responses. Patients with COPD and humoral dysfunction will be offered treatment with Subcutaneous Immune Globulin Replacement Therapy (SCIgR) in an attempt to decrease future AECOPD.

TRIAD Appendicitis Decision-making Surveys
Recruiting
While appendectomy has been the main treatment of appendicitis for over 100 years, recent European studies found that, at least among highly selected patients, antibiotics alone can be an effective alternative. Surgeons and patients alike have a difficult time deciding if surgery or antibiotics are the best choice to treat appendicitis. The goal of the TRIAD is to evaluate the patients who are a part of the TRIAD implementation program and assess satisfaction and decisional regret for patients w... Read More

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Following Traumatic Brain Injury
Recruiting
Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury will be randomly assigned to an active heart rate variability biofeedback condition and a sham condition. The investigators will use a randomized pre-post design that will consist of two data collection phases and a 5-week treatment condition. The heart rate variability biofeedback active condition is designed to increase heart rate oscillations (Osc+ condition) consistent with current best practices, while the sham control heart rate variability biof...
