The current investigation consists of the implementation and modest refinements of a culturally adapted version of the evidence-based PT intervention known as GenerationPMTO.© The adapted intervention, CAPAS-Youth, is primarily delivered to parents. The primary research objectives are twofold: a) to conduct refinements of the CAPAS-Youth intervention for Hispanic immigrants in mid-Texas, and b) to measure implementation barriers and precursors, as well as implementation outcomes, in an effort to inform a future study focused on scaling the intervention. A special focus on faith-based organization informs the intervention, as a way of increasing reach with underserved Hispanic immigrant communities. Read Less

During pregnancy, gestational diabetes increases the risk of complications and adverse outcomes for mother and child, however about 50% of gestational diabetes cases are diagnosed without a known risk factor present. This project uses both a large sample retrospective study, and a prospective study to help us understand the mechanisms by which mental health and stress impact glucose metabolization during pregnancy and delineate their contribution to gestational diabetes and racial disparities. The investigators expect, to improve the ability to identify women at risk, and advance options for preventative care and treatment, decreasing the impact of gestational diabetes and related complications. The purpose of this study is to understand if training Parkinson's disease patients in classical guitar will improve motor function, mood, and quality of life. While medication has been found to be effective for many Parkinson's disease patients, many patients still have symptoms. Previous studies have found that music and rhythm-based activities can help Parkinson's disease symptoms. A previous study looked at the effect of playing classical guitar on Parkinson's disease symptoms. They found positive changes in Parkinson's disease symptoms that lasted for 6 weeks after the study ended. Further, there were positive changes in depression, anxiety, and quality of life. Read Less

An external tunneled central venous access device (CVAD) is a small plastic tube that is tunneled under the skin into a major vein for long-term use (Figure 1). Patients who require a tunneled CVAD are some of the sickest patients we encounter and include oncology, hematology, and gastrointestinal (intestinal failure) patients. These patients are heavily reliant on their tunneled CVAD, which can be a lifeline for long-term administration of chemotherapeutics, IV medications, blood product transfusions, antibiotics, enteral nutrition, blood draws and fluids. Unfortunately, nearly 30% of pediatric external tunneled CVADs fail prior to the completion of treatment. External tunneled CVAD failures lead to unnecessary morbidity and mortality, interruption of medical therapy, and the added costs and risks associated with additional procedural complications. It is hypothesized that a newly designed securement method for external tunneled central venous access devices (CVAD) will reduce catheter-related complications and increase patient, parent and provider satisfaction, compared to the current standard of care, which is a clear transparent film dressing over the catheter exit site. A 20 patient, prospective clinical trial is proposed to address the following specific aims, which will determine if the securement device: 1. Is rated by patients, parents and providers as easy to apply and comfortable for users 2. Reduces CVAD-related complications, such as delayed healing of the tract, catheter-related infections, and episodes of catheter dislodgement 3. Improves the quality of life for patients and their parents 4. Is preferred over the standard, clear transparent dressing alone 5. Requires any design modifications to improve performance and/or comfort of the device Read Less

To examine the prevalence of humoral immunodeficiency in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) by evaluating both immunoglobulin levels and vaccine responses. While appendectomy has been the main treatment of appendicitis for over 100 years, recent European studies found that, at least among highly selected patients, antibiotics alone can be an effective alternative. Surgeons and patients alike have a difficult time deciding if surgery or antibiotics are the best choice to treat appendicitis. The goal of the TRIAD is to evaluate the patients who are a part of the TRIAD implementation program and assess satisfaction and decisional regret for patients with appendicitis. This information will be used to inform the design of decision-support interventions to help patients improve their ability to make an informed decision in-line with their preferences and values. Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury will be randomly assigned to an active heart rate variability biofeedback condition and a sham condition. The investigators will use a randomized pre-post design that will consist of two data collection phases and a 5-week treatment condition. The heart rate variability biofeedback active condition is designed to increase heart rate oscillations (Osc+ condition) consistent with current best practices, while the sham control heart rate variability biofeedback condition is designed to decrease heart rate oscillations (Osc- condition).
