This study is focused on characterizing the toxic and carcinogenic potential of the Standardized Research E-cigarette (SREC) developed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In the environment of continuously changing e-cigarette market, SREC was developed as a model e-cigarette that will remain available for an extended period of time and can be used as a bridging element in various studies aimed at evaluating the value and limitations of e-cigarettes as tobacco risk reduction tools. The purpose of this general screening protocol is to facilitate recruitment into studies conducted at the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research (CVVR) or Division of Infectious Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The purpose of this study is to assess the utility of renal near infrared spectroscopy in the outpatient setting during the interstage period. The primary aim will be to determine the correlation between oxygen extraction ratio ((arterial pulse oximetry - renal near infrared spectroscopy value)/arterial pulse oximetry value) with need for inpatient admission or intervention. Secondary aims will be to determine the correlation of the oxygen extraction ratio with weight gain, neurodevelopment, unexpected admissions, systemic ventricular strain by echocardiography, and Glenn hospitalization admission characteristics. This is a digital health study in which participants are recruited to collect sleep and activity data from digital activity trackers. We are also collecting survey/questionnaire data on baseline health and sleep characteristics as well as bi-weekly assessments of sleep quality and mood. Cigarette smoking is more prevalent (50-70%) in persons living with HIV in the U.S. when compared with the general population and is linked to increased rates of heart disease, lung diseases and infections, and lung cancers. Because of their high levels of nicotine dependence, low quit rates, and familiarity with harm reduction, HIV-positive smokers may view the use of alternative nicotine delivery products, such as electronic cigarettes (ECs), as an attractive option for reducing and eventually stopping combustible cigarette use. However, little is known about the health effects of electronic cigarette use in HIV-positive smokers. Some studies have shown that electronic cigarette use was associated with increased confidence to quit smoking in the general population. The primary objectives of this project are to examine whether HIV-positive smokers, who are unwilling or unable to quit smoking, will substitute an electronic cigarette for regular cigarettes, and to examine whether there are any changes in heart and lung health in HIV-positive smokers who switch from regular cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. The study investigates an investigational drug called etavopivat in participants with hepatic impairments and participants with normal hepatic function (matched controls). During the study, all participants will be given a single oral dose of etavopivat. All participants will take the etavopivat orally together with water. After dosing, the study will last for 7 to 9 days. Read Less

There are two study periods for the TCU JCOIN project. The primary aims of Study 1 (approved by the TCU IRB) are (1) to gather information from staff on the current treatment referral process within participating communities and (2) to learn about the existing interrelationships between medical and community behavioral health (CBH) providers. TCU IRB granted approval for Phase 1 on 11/07/19, approval number: 1920-60-AM1. Study 2 (under current review by the TCU IRB) includes recruitment across 18 community collaboration sites across 3 states; these communities will participate in the TCU Opioid-Treatment Linkage Model (O-TLM) protocol. The O-TLM is focused on best practices for improving screening, identifying and linking to MOUD providers, reducing stigma, and addressing other important factors that impact justice-involved individuals returning to their communities. Along with their agency records, information collected from justice-involved individuals within the target communities will be examined to assess O-TLM impact on improving public health and public safety outcomes. Furthermore, stakeholder staff across community organizations, including criminal justice and treatment agencies, will be asked to complete surveys on the O-TLM regarding its acceptability and adoption, as well as on best training strategies.
