Although patients and physicians have shown tremendous interest in the effect of diet on ulcerative colitis, there is a lack of significant evidence for providers to make practical recommendations with. In this study, the investigators hope to find out if dietary therapy by either the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) or the Mediterranean diet will help improve ulcerative colitis symptoms for patients with mild to moderately active disease. In addition, the investigators will compare disease activity and changes in the intestinal bacterial composition in the colon that occur with the Mediterranean or the SCD diet in active ulcerative colitis. This study is proposed as a single-site randomized trial consisting of 10 study visits to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) over 12 weeks. Participants in this study will be randomly assigned to the SCD or Mediterranean diet. The investigators ask that participants exclusively consume their assigned diet for 6 weeks, with all meals and snacks prepared by the metabolic kitchen within MGH. Participants will need to pick up food from MGH every 5-7 days, and will meet with a study dietitian before they begin and weekly during the diet therapy. There will be a screening visit to determine eligibility for the study, as well as study visits at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, and a 10 week follow-up at MGH, in which participants will fill out questionnaires. Participants will need to provide stool samples at screening, week 6, and week 10. In addition, blood will be drawn at week 0 and week 6, and if participants are getting a clinically-indicated colonoscopy at the time of screening, up to eight research biopsies may be collected during the procedure. This study will examine what child variables (i.e., social attention and peer interest) predict communication gains in response to a peer-mediated intervention for 40 minimally-verbal preschool children with ASD and 80 peers. The Stay-Play-Talk with iPad intervention will be implemented for 8 weeks. Gains in communication and reciprocity with peers will be measured at post-treatment and in non-treatment settings. Another goal is to determine if variance in communication gains accounted for by the two social variables differs based on the pre-treatment measurement context. Read Less

For the past 20+ years the investigators have focused on addressing two interrelated public health issues, alcohol use disorder (AUD) and suicide in Alaska. There is no greater source of health disparity in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities than that involving AUD and suicide, and no greater necessity in addressing this disparity than the development of sustained, trusting, collaborative, and non-exploitive research relationships with those who historically experienced forced acculturation and exploitation. Yup'ik community leaders have made addressing AUD and suicide among their highest priorities. Working with Yup'ik community members, the investigators developed a multilevel (individual, family, peer, and community) intervention that uses a culturally-based AUD and suicide prevention framework. The Qungasvik (kung-az-vik; a Yup'ik word meaning 'toolbox') intervention is a Yup'ik AN approach to prevention organized and implemented utilizing a local indigenous theory of change and process model to build protective factors against AUD and suicide. The purposes of the proposed research are to: (a) validate results obtained from previous smaller intervention studies aimed at reducing the incidence of AUD and suicide in 12-18 year old Yup'ik Alaska Native (AN) youth; and (b) learn more about the relative importance of the individual, family, peer, and community variables that underscore the Qungasvik intervention. This study will: (a) assess the efficacy of the Qungasvik intervention through a two group community level trial using an interrupted time series design with wait-listed control, and (b) examine mechanisms of change in response to intervention. Specific aims (SA) of the project are to: (SA1) test the Qungasvik intervention efficacy through impact on the ultimate outcome variables of reasons for life and reflective processes on alcohol use consequences, and on suicidal ideation and alcohol use; (SA2) examine the mechanisms of change in response to the Qungasvik intervention through (a) self-report outcome measures of protective factors (b) social network assessment and (c) process evaluation; (SA3) test levels of fidelity of the implementation of the intervention with regard to the Yup'ik indigenous theory-driven intervention model outlined in the Qungasvik manual of operations. This study will assess the efficacy of the text messaging (SMS-based) disease management intervention for children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) using the timeliness of stimulant prescription renewals over a 9-month period. Parents of participants in the study will receive customized text messages once a day, Sunday through Friday, for a duration of 9 months. The text messages will include reminders to adhere to the individualized medication regimen, reminders to call their child's clinician for a prescription refill followed by reminders to pick up medication from the pharmacy, and educational reminders about ADHD and its treatment. Senior Companion Programs (SCP) facilitate partnerships between community volunteers and local homebound seniors. Seniors served by the SCP will be provided with a companion who will conduct weekly visits with them, help with meal preparation or deliveries, provide transportation, assist with simple housekeeping, and socialize with the client amongst other tasks. These services are directed towards helping the senior client continue living independently in their own home instead of moving into an assisted living or nursing home. The SCP model is being evaluated to determine the impact of the services on the client's overall well-being and independent living status. Read Less

The aim of this 10-week pilot study is to explore the potential benefit of two recently developed non-invasive interventions, heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) and OTC supplement hydrogen water, for the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Symptom measures and heart monitoring information will be generated by this study. Given the lack of effective treatments in this illness, these two non-invasive home-based treatments may help patients feel and function better. Read Less
