This study will investigate the potential benefits of rose scent in reducing the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) in patients with epilepsy. Participants will engage in their routine inpatient observational EEG monitoring for 24 hours followed by an additional 24 hours of observational EEG monitoring with continuous exposure to rose scent, during which an essential oil diffusor with rose scent will be placed in their hospital room. During these 48 total hours of the study, participants will wear a respiratory monitoring belt across their upper chest to measure their breathing. Potential risks include distress or discomfort when smelling the rose scent used in the study, a physical reaction to the rose scent, and discomfort or feelings of restrictiveness when wearing the respiratory monitoring belt. The total time commitment of the study is 48 consecutive hours over the course of the participants' inpatient EMU stay, during which there will be no restrictions on daily activities during the standard inpatient EMU admission except that participants must wear their respiratory belt for a majority of this 2-day period. This open label, multi-center study will collect data from the participant's use of My Connect Post-Op Software as a post-operative communication solution in supporting patient recovery through Technology-Assisted Conversation (TAC). The application will be tested by patients who have undergone total joint replacement as a post-op communication tool. Data will be collected on how effectively the product guides patients through their recovery, identifying potential complications, and providing appropriate recommendations based on structured question pairs. The goal of this observational study is to learn more about the biology of cervical cancer in women who receive radiation therapy for this condition. The main question it aims to answer is: Does radiation therapy alter the expression of tissue factor and other molecules in cervical cancer over time? Participants already scheduled for radiation therapy for cervical cancer as part of their regular medical care will provide blood and biopsies of cervical cancer or of the upper portion of the vagina before, during, and on the last day of radiation therapy. Although many children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) make significant progress in learning and their cognitive skills improve with applied behavior analysis (ABA), there are a significant number of children who show an absence or a plateau in various skills. Deficits in executive functioning are likely to be involved in many of these cognitive and learning disabilities due to poor functioning of the prefrontal cortex. Currently, the use of biological methods for improving learning and cognition is largely unexplored in research and practice. The aim of this study is to use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in combination with ABA to improve the acquisition of educational programs for students with ASD. tDCS is a low-level electrical neurostimulation and is most effective when used in combination with an active training or teaching, facilitating the neuronal circuits used for that task. tDCS has been used for various indications over a couple of decades and has been shown to be very safe and has been well-tolerated by children with ASD. The mechanism of tDCS is not clear, however animal studies show that tDCS can stimulate the flow of calcium ions through channels in the astrocytes, activating them, and facilitating their role in synapse formation and therefore learning. The investigators aim to use smart-home sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and detect Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD)-specific daily activities among older adults, with the goal of early symptom detection and personalized support. Dementia, which impacts memory and cognition, remains a global concern. In the United States, more than 6.7 million individuals aged 65 and older are living with ADRD, and projected annual healthcare costs are expected to reach $1 trillion by 2050. This underscores the need for deeper understanding and innovative support. To address the unique challenges associated with ADRD, such as cognitive decline, personalized strategies that promote independent well-being are essential. Smart-home sensors can support older adults with ADRD as they continue to live in their homes. These sensors provide real-time data on health and daily activities, offering insights into their daily lives. However, adoption of these technologies is low, and the practical application of AI remains limited. This highlights the need for further research to make these devices more accessible to this population. The investigators' aims include: Conducting focus groups with individuals with and without ADRD and their caregivers to identify daily activities that can be measured using in-home sensors; Collecting in-home sensor data from older adults with and without ADRD; and Using AI to develop a tool for recognizing daily activities. The integration of smart-home sensors with advanced data-analysis techniques holds significant potential for transforming the support and care provided to individuals with ADRD. Ultimately, the investigators' findings will contribute to improving the quality of life for affected individuals and alleviating the burden on caregivers and healthcare systems. Read Less

The research objective of the proposed usability study is to assess the compliance and acceptance/satisfaction of using a bimodal stimulation device with the modification of the sound stimulus to the participant's tinnitus pitch. In particular, the sound stimulus will not contain the pitch of the tinnitus, which may increase comfort and usability with the device since it will be customized to their tinnitus. Furthermore, virtual follow-up assessments and/or phone calls will be performed, thus significantly reducing the burden and personnel requirements for in-person visits as originally performed with the current clinic process. The 'CRS validation project' consists of a joint effort of 32 medical centers in Europe, the USA, and South Africa to carry out the validation of 2 novel questionnaires designated to measure self-perceived severity and control of Chronic Rhinosinusitis (with or without nasal polyps). This study will validate translated versions of the same set of questionnaires simultaneously in the centers involved after recruiting a total of 1000 patients, while data collection, statistical analysis, and creation of the study report will be carried out by the statistical department of the University of Leuven.
