The goal of this prospective pragmatic randomized clinical trial is to determine if preoperative administration of tranexamic acid (TXA) reduces bleeding during and after major colorectal surgery. The primary questions are: * Does TXA reduce bleeding during and after surgery (change in hemoglobin from before surgery to lowest value after surgery within 30 days) * Does TXA reduce bleeding complications within 30 days of surgery (blood transfusion, return to the operating room or procedural intervention for bleeding, death due to bleeding) * Does TXA increase the risk of thromboembolic complications within 30 days of surgery (cerebrovascular accident, myocardial infarction, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism) Researchers will compare preoperative TXA to no TXA to answer the above questions. The purpose of this study is to collect electrophysiological data related to functional brain network changes in patients undergoing deep brain stimulation for the treatment of essential tremor. Participants will either 1) have electroencephalography (EEG) scalp electrodes placed, or 2) remain seated with their head inside of a magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording system, as resting-state and task-related data are acquired. Spontaneous electrophysiological activity will be recorded in both the eyes open and eyes closed conditions with the participant seated comfortably. These recordings will be repeated in the DBS OFF and DBS ON states, with the ON state involving specific settings identified as optimal, sub-optimal, or ineffective at achieving tremor control. They will also be repeated following the optional administration non-DBS tremor mitigation techniques, which may include one or more of the following: 1) cooling the limb, 2) oral administration of alprazolam, 3) oral consumption of ethanol (alcohol), or 4) peripheral nerve stimulation. The purpose of this study is to use a scale to learn more about the tension of the abdominal wall in hernia repairs without component separation. 1. What is the abdominal wall tension for hernias repaired without a component separation? 2. What patient factors contribute to greater abdominal wall tension? 3. Is there an association between abdominal wall tension before primary closure or bridging repair and patient outcomes? Participants will be asked to allow their surgeon to use a tension scale to measure the tension of the abdominal wall during surgery. Read Less
