Team Science (The Liver Health Study)
Recruiting
Liver damage from alcohol intake and weight-related behaviors is preventable and treatable only through lifestyle changes. This mixed-methods randomized controlled trial compares standard and enhanced approaches to screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment/prevention (SBIRT/P) to identify and intervene for metabolism- and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD). Our multidisciplinary team aims to show that integrating results of noninvasive liver screening with Fibroscan®, a pai... Read More

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is highly prevalent globally, with considerable morbidity and mortality associated. In the US, it is the 4th leading cause of death, as well as contributing to significant costs on healthcare utilization including hospitalization. Population-based screening for COPD has not been recommended by the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF). However, LDCT screening for lung cancer in patients aged 50- 80 with ≥ 20 pack year smoking has been shown to improve... Read More

Personalized Environment and Genes Study
Recruiting
Despite the overwhelming focus on genetic and genomic causes of human disease over the past two decades, it has been estimated that genetics is currently known to explain only 20% and 40% of the etiology of common disease. Thus, it is becoming increasingly apparent that human disease is a consequence of both genetic susceptibility and environmental exposures. Importantly, while individuals cannot change their genetic composition, we do have the ability both personally and as a society, to influe... Read More

Screening of Healthy Volunteers for Investigational Antimalarial Drugs, Malaria Vaccines, and Controlled Human Malaria Challenge
Recruiting
Background:
Malaria is a serious infection caused by a parasite. People get malaria when an infected mosquito bites them. Malaria can cause major health and social problems in places were malaria is common, such as Africa but can also affect travelers who have never been exposed to malaria. Researchers at the NIH want to find a safe and effective malaria vaccine, antimalarial drugs, or prevention regimen. To do this, healthy volunteers are recruited under a general screening study in order to s... Read More

Sample Collection From Healthy Volunteers for Assay Optimization
Recruiting
Background:
The Laboratory of Immune System Biology (LISB) works with other labs at the National Institutes of Health. They study how parts of living things come together to make a whole. LISB designs and improves research tests on human samples like blood and cells. In order to do its work, LISB needs to have a lot of these samples available.
Objective:
To collect biological specimens to use for designing and improving research tests. Specimens include blood, stool, saliva, and skin/mucosal... Read More

CHIP/CCUS Natural History Protocol
Recruiting
Background:
Clonal Hematopoiesis of Indeterminate Potential (CHIP) is a change in a person s DNA that can increase a person s risk of developing blood cancers or cardiovascular disease. CHIP occurs mostly occurs in older people. Clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance (CCUS) occurs when one or more blood cell types is lower than it should be and is associated with a change in their DNA. Researchers want to learn more about how CHIP and CCUS progress.
Objective:
To examine the natural hi... Read More

Recruiting
Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a major cause of mortality in United States. Aging is a major risk factor for adverse outcomes associated with HFrEF, with majority of the patient's over the age of 50, continuing to experience symptoms, reduced exercise capacity and poor quality of life. We have previously demonstrated that low level transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve at the tragus (LLTS) suppresses inflammation in patients with atrial fibrillation an...
