DevRobust Treatment for Mal de Débarquement Syndrome
Recruiting
Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is an under-recognized balance disorder, which is manifested by persistent false sensations of oscillatory self-motion (rocking/swaying) and/or pulling in a specific direction (gravitational pull). Patients with MdDS typically experience additional presumably secondary symptoms, such as heightened sensitivity to visual motion (visually induced dizziness, VID), physical motion (motion sickness, MS), and other debilitating physical, cognitive, or affective probl... From Nerve to Brain: Toward a Mechanistic Understanding of Spinal Cord Stimulation in Human Subjects
Recruiting
This is a multicenter prospective study of patients who currently have stably implanted spinal cord simulators. Patients will be randomly assigned to turn on or off their spinal cord stimulators for two week intervals up to six weeks after enrollment, and on the final day of study participation, for one hour intervals, in a multi-crossover design. In a subset of patients we will also perform combined positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging at baseline, week 2 and week 4.

3D-Printed Versus Laboratory-Fabricated Hyrax Expanders
Recruiting
Maxillary expanders are orthodontic appliances that are commonly used to expand the upper jaw. The purpose of this study will be to compare the effects produced by two different maxillary expanders in children 8-13 years old. The first type of expander is made by hand in an orthodontic laboratory, and the second type of expander is designed on a computer and printed using 3D printers. Both expanders are already used in the MUSC Orthodontics Clinic. The purpose of this study is to see if the 3D p... Read More

Pulsed Dose Chemotherapy Plus Pembrolizumab in Recurrent/Metastatic HNSCC
Recruiting
The rationale for the new sequence of pulsed dose chemotherapy proposed in this trial is based on the hypotheses that current standard dosing of chemotherapy plus pembrolizumab ultimately suppresses the immune system and has a negative effect on the efficacy of the anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy and that chemotherapy given after anti-PD-1 mAb therapy is associated with higher efficacy.

Effects of a Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet or Mediterranean Diet on Markers of Musculoskeletal Health in Older Adults
Recruiting
Preclinical data indicate that very low carbohydrate ketogenic diets (KD) may prevent progression of age-related sarcopenia (skeletal muscle decline) but also may disturb bone metabolism. The investigators will pilot test a randomized trial comparing the effects of short-term adaptation to a well-formulated ketogenic diet and Mediterranean diet on markers of bone metabolism and muscle function in older adults. The expected results will help inform the benefit-risk assessment for older patients c... Read More

Pain Control and Quality of Recovery After Intravenous Methadone Versus Intrathecal Morphine in Major Abdominal Surgery
Recruiting
Moderate to severe postoperative pain is relatively common after major abdominal surgery. It is associated with less than optimal surgical experience, poor quality of recovery, and the development of persistent postsurgical pain. Opioids remain a significant component of postoperative pain management. Side effects of opioids used for the treatment of postoperative pain include constipation, pruritus, nausea, and vomiting. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols involve the utilization o... Read More

Pilot Study of IC14 (Atibuclimab), an Anti-CD14 Monoclonal Antibody, to Treat STEMI
Recruiting
Adults who have had an ST-elevation myocardial infarction and were treated with stent placement will receive an intravenous infusion of a monoclonal antibody in order to prevent further heart muscle damage. The goal is to learn if this treatment improves some measures of heart function and inflammation. The study treatment patients will be compared to patients who receive placebo (inactive treatment).

Sensory Motor Transformations in Human Cortex
Recruiting
This research study is being conducted to develop a brain controlled medical device, called a brain-machine interface. The device will provide people with a spinal cord injury some ability to control an external device such as a computer cursor or robotic limb by using their thoughts along with sensory feedback.
Development of a brain-machine interface is very difficult and currently only limited technology exists in this area of neuroscience. Other studies have shown that people with high spin... Read More

The specific aims are as follows:
1. Investigate whether ketoconazole cream, a commonly used topical antifungal, causes alterations in the human skin microbiome with short-term use.
