This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of acute and chronic consumption of two sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) varieties-'Rosy Red Valencia', which is rich in carotenoids such as lycopene, phytoene, and phytofluene, and 'Olinda Valencia', which lacks these carotenoids-in healthy adults. In this 4-week, randomized, parallel-arm clinical trial, participants will consume either 'Rosy Red Valencia' or 'Olinda Valencia' oranges daily. The study will assess the effects of sweet orange intake on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation, plasma carotenoid concentrations, gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and gut health. Findings from this study may help identify potential health benefits associated with specific carotenoid profiles in sweet oranges and provide insights into their role in modulating inflammation and oxidative stress. The proposed research will characterize withdrawal among people with schizophrenia who vape daily compared to people with schizophrenia who smoke combustible cigarettes daily, filling critical gaps in the understanding of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) dependence and contributing to the development of vaping cessation interventions amongst people with schizophrenia, the leading preventable cause of death in the US. Family members/support persons' engagement in mental health services has been linked to reduced burden and stress and improves engagement and outcomes in individuals in the early stages of psychosis. The goal of FAMES is to address low family member/support person engagement in services. The purpose of this study is to establish retrospectively a nationwide registry of patients who have suffered drug-induced liver injury (DILI), and to collect, immortalize, and store serum, DNA, and lymphocytes from these patients. ILIAD will serve as a resource for subsequent mechanistic investigations into the basis of severe idiosyncratic DILI. The primary goal of the ILIAD protocol is to create: (a) a clinical database consisting of individuals who have experienced severe DILI and the relevant clinical data concerning the episode of DILI; and, (b) to create a bank of biological specimens obtained from these individuals. These biological specimens will be DNA, plasma, and immortalized lymphocytes. Immortalized lymphocytes will provide unlimited amounts of genomic DNA for study as well as living immune cells for phenotyping studies. A secondary goal of the ILIAD protocol is to maintain a registry of cases in the ILIAD database so that they may be recontacted in the future. The aim of this protocol is for the VISN 19 MIRECC Research Database (V19-MRD), to have a data repository of participants for possible recruitment from other studies being conducted at the VISN 19 MIRECC. Studying the morphology and function of the normal and diseased retina in vivo is needed for advancing the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of retinal disease. This protocol uses an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) to image the normal and diseased retina with individual cellular resolution non-invasively. The primary objective of this study is to obtain and analyze high-resolution images of the retina, in particular by imaging the cone photoreceptor mosaic, the retinal vasculature and other retinal layers. The study design will involve case-control studies, where cases are followed over time. Subjects age 7 and older may be invited to participate. The main research procedure involves retinal imaging with the AOSLO. The primary endpoint is the observation of differences in retinal images between subjects with and without retinal diseases. These changes will be quantified by examining the cell density, size, spacing and regularity of the cone photoreceptor mosaic, as well as examining the differences between other retinal layers. This study seeks to learn more about the vitamin D receptor and its relationship to colon cancer. The Vitamin D receptor is found in colon cancer cells. When Vitamin D binds to the receptor in the cancer cells, it may stop cancer cells from growing abnormally and may cause cancer cell death. Vitamin D has been used in other research studies and information from those other research studies suggests that Vitamin D may help in the treatment of colon cancer. Participants will receive either high-dose vitamin D or standard-dose vitamin D. The study drug will be given 14-28 days prior to your surgery. This study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of topical tranexamic acid to reduce perioperative blood loss, reduction in postoperative drain output and allogenic transfusion requirements. The proposed study will be a prospective, randomized, double-blind (subject, surgeons, investigators, research coordinators) placebo-controlled study. Patients requiring posterior spinal fusion will be enrolled for this study. Furthermore, patients undergoing elective complex deformity surgery will also be enrolled. Both populations of patients will be randomized into two groups. Group I will receive standard of care operative fixation with topical tranexamic acid intervention (test); Group II will receive standard of care operative fixation with normal saline (placebo) intervention. This study will have a 2-year follow-up and will consist of three periods: screening/enrollment phase up to 21 days from the day of injury to the day of randomization and operative intervention, an inpatient data collection period for 4 days postoperative, and then a follow-up period for 2-years postoperative (visits occurring at 16 weeks, 1 year, and 2 year) time points.
