Depression doubles the risk of death in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), but so far, there is insufficient evidence that we can reduce the risk of death by treating depression. This study will investigate the cardiac risk markers that are associated with depression symptoms that remain despite treatment, and identify potential targets for their treatment. The results of the study will inform the development of more effective interventions to improve both depression and survival in patients with CHD. Read Less

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with significant, progressive cognitive decline. Key defects in mitochondrial fuel metabolism insulin resistance, inflammation and decreased brain glucose uptake are linked to AD. This trial will investigate the effects of supplementing glycine and N-acetylcysteine vs. alanine as placebo on these defects in AD, and examine the effects on cognition. Read Less

Glucagon like peptide (GLP-1) agonists, such as liraglutide, exenatide, and semaglutide, have been increasingly used as a medication to address the current twin epidemics of diabetes and obesity. Their activities include increasing insulin production by pancreatic beta cells, improving insulin sensitivity in muscles and weight loss. The mechanisms underpinning the weight loss caused by GLP-1 agonists have not yet been fully elucidated, but brown adipose tissue (BAT) appears to play an important role. We propose to assess BAT activity, using infrared thermography camera images, before individuals start weekly administration of semaglutide, at week 2-4, and week 18-20. We hypothesize that this GLP-1 agonist, semaglutide, will cause an increase in BAT activity and a corresponding increase in basal metabolic rate. Read Less

The long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon is thought to be a common source of shoulder pain and dysfunction in patients with rotator cuff pathology. Tenotomy and tenodesis have been shown to produce favourable and comparable results in treating LHB lesions, but a controversy still exists regarding the treatment of choice. Some suggest that tenotomy should be reserved for older, low-demand patients, while tenodesis should be performed in younger patients and those who engage in heavy labor. Proponents of tenotomy suggest that this is a technically easy procedure that leads to easy rehabilitation and fast return to activity with a low complication and reoperation rate. However, those who support LHB tenodesis list good preservation of elbow flexion and supination strength, improvement of functional scores, elimination of pain, and avoidance of cosmetic deformity as benefits of the procedure. Alternatively, the LHB can be maintained in the joint without tenodesis or tenotomy. In fact, it has not been clearly shown that LHB tenodesis or tenotomy leads to improved outcomes compared to leaving the biceps tendon intact. Read Less

This phase II trial tests whether NBT-NM108 works in reducing chemotherapy-induced diarrhea in patients with colon cancer that has spread to other places in the body (metastatic). Irinotecan is one of the most used medicine for colon cancer, but it leads to diarrhea in most patients receiving it and among some of them, severe diarrhea can occur. NBT-NM108 is a high dietary fiber formula that is developed based on research findings that have shown that high fiber diets can help maintain healthy bacteria in the gut and improve gut function. Giving NBT-NM108 to patients with colon cancer receiving chemotherapy may help relieve or lessen diarrhea symptoms and lead to improved tolerance of the chemotherapy drug, irinotecan. Read Less

This is a single dose, placebo-controlled study. Male subjects aged 18 to 40 years (inclusive) with a diagnosis of FXS. Eligible subjects may enroll in this study comprised of two in home and two in clinic visits each 14 days apart, for a total of four visits. Subjects will be given single dose gaboxadol (10 mg) or matched placebo at each of these visits to take orally. Thus, all enrolled subjects will receive placebo at home and in clinic and receive gaboxadol at home and in clinic in a blinded fashion. Read Less
