Prognostic Evaluation of Inflammatory Polyarthritis of Recent Onset
Recruiting
Inflammatory joint diseases are major causes of invalidity and morbidity. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most frequent of chronic arthritides, affects close to 1% of the Canadian population. Direct and indirect costs of RA represent close to 1% of the gross national product. Recent evidence suggest that initiation of early (e.g., during the first 3-12 months of disease) aggressive treatment decreases both mortality and long term invalidity in RA and other chronic arthritides. However, a signific... Read More

Intraoperative Navigation for Surgically Precise Resection of the Chest (INSPIRE)
Recruiting
While undergoing chest wall resection, a surgeon's major concern is obtaining an appropriate surgical margin. Difficulty or failure to do so can result in prolonged operative time, need for re-operation due to a positive resection margin, or need for complex chest wall reconstruction due to unnecessarily wide resection. Over the last decades, surgical navigation systems have been developed to improve operative precision in various surgical fields. This is achieved by integrating patient images w... Read More

Standardized Goal-Directed Vs. Self-Directed Valsalva Maneuver for the Assessment of Patent Foramen Ovale
Recruiting
Ischemic stroke represents a major public health issue, leading to significant disabilities and deaths worldwide. When no clear cause for stroke is found following a comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation (no atrial fibrillation, cardiac masses, or atherosclerosis) i.e. cryptogenic stroke, it is recommended to search for a patent foramen ovale (PFO), especially in young patients. It is estimated that cryptogenic stroke accounts for 30% to 40% of ischemic strokes. Transthoracic echocardiography... Read More

Comprehensive Health Assessment for My Plan: Initial Implementation Study (CHAMP Implementation Study)
Recruiting
The current standard preoperative assessment does not consider the needs of older adults undergoing non-oncological surgery. To enhance the treatment decision-making and planning for older adult surgical patients, the British Geriatric Society and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons recommend the implementation of preoperative GA for all older adults. Geriatric assessment (GA) predicts treatment toxicity and overall mortality in older adults with complex health problems. However, i... Read More

Trikafta Exercise Study in Cystic Fibrosis
Recruiting
Shortness of breath (dyspnea) during exercise is a major source of distress and is a commonly reported symptom in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). A recent drug treatment option known as Trikafta, which contains elexacaftor, tezacaftor, and ivacaftor, may be used in patients with CF to help improve lung health. However, the effects of this combination therapy on dyspnea and exercise performance, a known predictor of survival in CF, are not clear. The investigators aim to understand the effect... Read More

DOnor Milk to REpair the Full-term Infant MIcrobiome in Infants Born Via Cesarean Section.
Recruiting
The objective of this novel study is to establish proof of concept using a pilot randomized controlled trial to determine the effect of DHM compared to formula supplementation on the microbiome in full-term infants who are born via caesarean section and require supplementation. Secondarily, this study aims to compare the infant health outcomes of sleep and growth between groups to assess if these outcomes are mediated by infant feeding type or potential differences in microbial signatures. Focused Suicide Prevention Strategy for Youth Presenting to the Emergency Department with Suicide Related Behaviour
Recruiting
Suicide is the leading cause of death due to illness among Canadian youth, claiming more lives than any medical illness, including cancer. Suicide prevention is possible, and early intervention is needed. The investigators will examine the effectiveness of a previously-piloted, ED-based suicide prevention intervention, across Canadian sites, using a randomized clinical trial design. The investigators will determine whether the patient- and family-centered intervention is more effective than enha... Read More

A Multi-centre Study of Shoe-worn Insoles and Knee Osteoarthritis
Recruiting
Shoe-worn insoles (also known as orthotics) can provide symptomatic relief for people with knee osteoarthritis. However, given they act at the feet, and given that many people with knee osteoarthritis also report foot pain, it is important to assess the effects of these devices at both joints. We will conduct a multi-centre randomized pilot trial to determine feasibility and preliminary efficacy.

Given the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society has recognized that patients on GLP-1 agonists may have an increased aspiration risk due to a 'full stomach,' even after following preoperative fasting guidelines. In other words, safe fasting timelines are not known in individuals taking GLP-1 agonists, as demonstrated by recent case reports of patients who either retained or regurgitated stomach contents...
