The International Severe Asthma Registry is a global initiative looking to ensure that the care of people with severe asthma will continue to improve by collecting detailed information about the health and treatment of as many people with the disease as possible. The study will gather anonymized longitudinal real-life data for participants with severe asthma for five years. The purpose of the registry is to track the progress of participants and determine how well they are responding to treatment. Medical research using data from the registry will give the investigators a better understanding of severe asthma and help the investigators develop and improve the care and treatment for severe asthma participants. The Canadian cohort of the registry will collect information from Canadian participants with severe asthma across seven different sites. Read Less

This project addresses the problem of adverse drug reactions in the three most frequently prescribed therapeutic classes of drugs in children: antibiotics, analgesics, and mental health medications. We will conduct pilot testing of a pharmacogenomic testing panel and study how the tests and generated test results are utilized and understood by physicians, pharmacists, patients and their families. Burn injuries can result in long term physical and mental sequelae, not only from the scarring but also the painful dressings. The standard of care today remains use of antibiotic topical dressings while awaiting demarcation of the burn depth, with surgical excision and grafting for deep partial thickness and full thickness areas. Demarcation can be appreciated on admission for full thickness burns but is often a prolonged process that can last weeks. The clinical evaluation of the depth of the burn is a complex decision that often is made more challenging by the presence of the proteinaceous pseudoeschar and the coagulated dermis itself. Surgical debridement is relatively 'coarse' and by its very nature requires removal of a thin layer of viable tissue to reach the level that is vascularized enough to support a skin graft. There has been growing interest in the use of adjuncts to reduce the amount tissue debrided and potentially reduce the need for surgery itself. Operatively, there have been some reports that use of hydro-dissection devices (Versajet™) may allow a more controlled debridement, resulting in less viable tissue being sacrificed. There is also a growing experience with enzymatic debridement, especially with Bromolein, derived from Pineapple (NexoBrid®). Neither of these have been shown to definitively improve care in randomized controlled trials, (RCTs) and there is suggestion that in some settings may actually cause harm. Read Less

Vaccines routinely used are extremely safe; however, severe adverse events to vaccines do occur. As vaccination against COVID-19 has begun, adverse events to the vaccine, particularly Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT)/thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), and myocarditis/pericarditis, after COVID-19 vaccination have been reported worldwide. Study hypothesis: there are genetic factors that contribute to increased risks of particular COVID-19 vaccine-induced adverse events. The objective of the study is to determine if there are specific genetic factors strongly associated with each of the COVID-19 vaccine-induced adverse events (i.e., GBS, VITT/TTS, and myocarditis/pericarditis). This randomized controlled trial (RCT) will aim to examine the effect of a 12-week behavioural intervention on changing the sedentary behaviours (SB) of prostate cancer survivors (PCS) compared to a control group (FitBit-only group). PCS in the intervention group will receive a FitBit and 6 behavioural support sessions with a movement specialist guided by behavioural theory (i.e., the Multi-Process Action Control \[M-PAC\]). The FitBit-only group will only receive a FitBit and access to public health resources on physical activity (PA). The primary purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of the intervention on changing SB of PCS immediately following the 12-week intervention and 6-months later. It is hypothesized that that the intervention will decrease their SB compared to the FitBit-only control condition at both timepoints. This trial will also examine the effect of the intervention on changing PA, motivational outcomes from the M-PAC framework, sleep quality, social support, physical function, quality of life, fatigue, disability and mental health compared to the active control condition. Accidental falls in older adults are one of the world's major pubic health problem, because of their strong association with injuries and mortality rates. In Quebec, falls are responsible for a high rate of hospitalization (more than 1800 emergency department visits every day) and deaths (more than 10,000 in recent years). Preventing falls is therefore a key mission for health professionals. This research program aims to develop a new clinical approach to the rehabilitation management of the older with a neuro-musculoskeletal disorder and a risk of falling. This program is part of a new partnership project between UQAC and specialized geriatric services at the CIUSSS Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (La Baie site). These geriatric services admit more than 400 new patients per year, representing a large pool of participants for the new program's development. Specifically, this program has 4 phases: 1) Create a clinical profile of patients in rehabilitation care from specialized geriatric services (ex: reasons for consultation, neuro-musculoskeletal disorders, rates and causes of falls, etc.); 2) to diagnose functional deficits of these patients on different dimensions of functional and physical evaluations, using standardized tests and high-tech instruments (ex: platform of force); 3) determine the effectiveness of a new exercise intervention program (OTAGO) for falls prevention; and 4) Measure client and professional team satisfaction as well as long-term impact of this new approach used to prevent falls. The most significant impact of this new program will be to reduce public health expenditure for care of older adults with balance disorder and risk for falls; and therefore, be implanted in other CIUSSS institutions from Quebec.
