Endovascular Acute Stroke Intervention - Tandem OCclusion Trial
Recruiting
Patients with tandem occlusion or tandem lesion (TL), that is, stroke with an acute intracranial anterior circulation occlusion and an ipsilateral cervical ICA (c-ICA) high-grade stenosis or occlusion, constitute about 15-20% of patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT).
However, the optimal treatment of acute stroke patients with TL remains uncertain, as relatively few patients with TL were included in the major randomized controlled trials of EVT and management of the c-ICA was gene... Read More

A Prospective Analysis of Long-Term Clinical Outcomes and 3D Spine Growth in Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering
Recruiting
Anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) is a novel, minimally invasive, growth modulation technique that was recently approved by the FDA under a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE). The goal of AVBT is to control curve progression by applying compression on the convex side of the spine deformity. While there has been great initial enthusiasm about the technique as an alternate treatment option to spinal fusion for skeletally immature children with scoliosis, there is a need to better understan... Comparing Arthroscopic Tennis Elbow Release With Arthroscopic Debridement
Recruiting
We propose a randomized, double-blind controlled trial comparing arthroscopic release with arthroscopic debridement for the management of chronic tennis elbow in an effort to definitively determine whether arthroscopic tennis elbow release is an effective treatment of tennis elbow, and to further provide better recommendations for the use of this procedure, in an effort to improve patient care.

Study of Food Aversion in Patients With Anorexia Nervosa
Recruiting
This study uses a meal-challenge protocol to assess if patients with anorexia nervosa show a differential metabolism in response to food in comparison to healthy controls. This study determines how heritable and biochemical factors influence food metabolism in anorexia nervosa in order to develop more effective treatment strategies.

SurgeCon: An Emergency Department Surge Management Platform
Recruiting
Wait times and overcrowding are challenging emergency departments (EDs) around the world. Several countries with advanced healthcare systems cannot keep pace with patient demand, and Canada ranks among the longest wait times compared to peer-industrialized countries. In fact, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) identified an 11% increase in ED wait times from 2015-2016 to 2016-2017. This translates to long wait times that deter patients from pursuing necessary care and increases... Read More

Comparison of Direct Anterior Approach vs. Lateral Hemiarthroplasty for Femoral Neck Fracture Repair
Recruiting
Recent research has demonstrated that a hemiarthroplasty (replacement of half the joint) has lower rates of post-surgical complications than a total hip arthroplasty does. However, surgeons tend to vary in their approach to hemiarthroplasties. The lateral approach, which involves making an incision at the side of the patient's hip, requires surgeons to cut through the muscle to access the hip, which has been associated with greater muscle damage and slower rates of recovery. On the other hand, t... Read More

Oral 'Breath Test' to Measure Anabolic Sensitivity in Young and Older Adults at Different Activity Levels
Recruiting
Recent work in the investigators laboratory has examined the ability of a non-invasive 13CO2 breath-test to assess differences in amino acid oxidation rates and net balance in young healthy males following protein feeding and resistance exercise. The investigators aim to test the efficacy of this non-invasive 13CO2 breath-test to assess for differences in anabolic sensitivity between young and older adults following an acute period of habitual and reduced physical activity.

The Effect of Exercise and Presleep Nutrition on Muscle Connective Tissue Remodelling
Recruiting
The primary objective of this study will be to determine the influence of a presleep vitamin C-enriched, collagen-modelled supplement (CVC) on the metabolic fate of dietary glycine using a \[2H5\]glycine tracer within the intramuscular connective tissue at rest and after a bout of resistance exercise. Other outcomes will be related to regulation collagen remodelling in skeletal muscle.

Oral Contraceptive vs Menstrual Cycle Ex Vivo Model
Recruiting
Despite comprising half the population, females are often left out of muscle research due to the impact of changing hormones during the menstrual cycle and when using oral contraceptives. This makes it hard to perform costly and invasive studies involving tracers to study muscle protein metabolism. Consequently, we lack a clear understanding of how these hormonal changes affect muscle growth.
There is a need for less invasive methods to study how sex hormones and oral contraceptives influence m... Read More
