Sympathetic-vascular Dysfunction in Obesity and Insulin Resistance (Vitamin C Study)
Recruiting
The main purpose of research is to examine and understanding the development of hypertension in obese adults with insulin resistance. Findings from our studies will identify unique mechanisms that can be targeted to limit increases in vascular dysfunction and reduce the excessively high prevalence of hypertension and risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study is testing the health of the blood vessels and the activity of the nerves that control the blood vessels in adults with insulin re... Read More

Mindfulness and Behavior Change to Improve Cardiovascular Health of Older People With HIV
Recruiting
Older people with HIV (OPWH) are disproportionately impacted by cardiovascular disease (CVD) attributable to behavioral risk factors, and chronic HIV immune dysregulation resulting inflammation. Systemic inflammation is exacerbated by psychological distress via activating the immune response and driving pro-inflammatory CVD risk behaviors. There is promising evidence to suggest that mindfulness could be an effective intervention to reduce psychological distress and support behaviorally- and infl... Read More

Estrogen and Microvascular Function
Recruiting
The goal of this study is to learn how long-term use of estrogen affects blood vessels in healthy adults who were assigned male at birth. Participants will: give one blood draw of 5 mL have a camera placed under the tongue to take pictures of blood vessels have 2 laser Doppler microdialysis catheters placed on the forearm to monitor blood vessels before and after local drug infusion Researchers will compare blood vessel function of those who take estrogen supplements to those who do not.

The Role of Social Determinants in Cardiovascular Health and Vascular Function
Recruiting
This study aims to identify the influence of social determinants of health domains on vascular function in a low income, racial, and ethnic minority population at risk for disparities. We hypothesize that individuals of a lower social economic position and those struggling with depression are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease.

Effect of PCSK9 Inhibition on Cardiovascular Risk in Treated HIV Infection (EPIC-HIV Study)
Recruiting
Atherosclerosis in the setting of HIV infection is distinct and includes increased vascular inflammation, worsened endothelial function, and a predominance of non-calcified plaque. These outcomes can be assessed using specialized noninvasive imaging which strongly predict future CV events in the general population. PCSK9 has emerged as an important pharmacologic target for cholesterol lowering in the general population and recent studies among individuals without HIV have shown that PCSK9 inhib... Read More

Recruiting
This is a randomized placebo-controlled study in treated and suppressed HIV-infected individuals aged ≥40 years with either known CVD or 1 CVD risk factor to study the effect of Bempedoic acid (BA) on safety, arterial inflammation as assessed by FDG-PET/CT, lipids, inflammation, immune activation, cardiometabolic indices, and non-calcified plaque (NCP) in the coronary arteries (assessed by coronary CT angiography, CCTA). This trial will be enrolled at UCSF and UCLA. Collaborators at Massachusett... Read More

The Effect of Transcutaneous Stimulation on Blood Pressure in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Recruiting
This project will investigate the effect of spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation on blood pressure in individuals with a chronic spinal cord injury who experience blood pressure instability, specifically, orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when moving from lying flat on your back to an upright position). The main questions it aims to answer are: What are the various spinal sites and stimulation parameters that normalize and stabilize blood pressure during an orthostatic provoc... Read More

Spinal Cord Transcutaneous Stimulation Effect on Blood Pressure in Acute Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effect of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation on blood pressure in individuals with an acute spinal cord injury (within 30 days of injury). Blood pressure instability, specifically orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when moving lying flat on your back to an upright position), appears early after the injury and often significantly interferes with participation in the critical rehabilitation time period. The main questions it ai... Read More
