The state of Iowa currently has 5 active clinical trials seeking participants for Dementia research studies. These trials are conducted in various cities, including Iowa City, Des Moines, Sioux City and Cedar Rapids.
Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 4
Recruiting
Since its launch in 2004, the overarching aim of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) Study has been to validate biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. ADNI4 continues the previously funded ADNI1, ADNI-GO, ADNI2, and ADNI3 studies that have combined public/private collaborations between academia and industry to determine the relationships between the clinical, cognitive, imaging, genetic and biochemical biomarker characteristics of the entire spectrum of AD.

Ferritin and Iron Burden in SAH sIRB
Recruiting
Ruptured cerebral aneurysms lead to subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH),that has a high morbidity and mortality rate, the severity of which is predicted by the "Hunt-Hess grade" (HHG). SAH leads to iron (Fe) and hemoglobin (Hb) accumulation in the brain, which is toxic for neurons. Ferritin (iron reported in the brian) and iron overload leads to brain atrophy, specifically in the mesial temporal lobe (hippocampus, impairing patients' cognition. It is estimated that 50% of survivors have cognitive def... Read More

Pragmatic Evaluation of Events And Benefits of Lipid-lowering in Older Adults
Recruiting
PREVENTABLE is a multi-center, randomized, parallel group, placebo-controlled superiority study. Participants will be randomized 1:1 to atorvastatin 40 mg or placebo. This large study conducted in community-dwelling older adults without cardiovascular disease (CVD) or dementia will demonstrate the benefit of statins for reducing the primary composite of death, dementia, and persistent disability and secondary composites including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and cardiovascular events.

PainChek® US Validation Nursing Home Study
Recruiting
Pain is common amongst people living with dementia. However, as people's dementia worsens their ability to self-report pain diminishes because of limitations in their cognition and communication abilities. As a result pain in people with moderate to severe dementia often goes under-recognised and undertreated. PainChek® is a technology-enabled, observational pain assessment tool, in the form of a mobile application designed specifically to assist healthcare professionals and professional caregi... Determinants of Incident Stroke Cognitive Outcomes and Vascular Effects on RecoverY
Recruiting
The overall goal of the DISCOVERY study is to better understand what factors contribute to changes in cognitive (i.e., thinking and memory) abilities in patients who experienced a stroke. The purpose of the study is to help doctors identify patients at risk for dementia (decline in memory, thinking and other mental abilities that significantly affects daily functioning) after their stroke so that future treatments may be developed to improve outcomes in stroke patients. For this study, a "stroke... Read More
