Patients successfully resuscitated from sudden cardiac arrest are often comatose, having suffered a period of low blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain. They are also at risk of suffering further brain injury during the immediate period after resuscitation, in which the brain's normal regulatory functions are impaired. To diagnose and treat secondary brain injury in comatose patients after cardiac arrest, doctors use a variety of neurological monitoring techniques. One of these methods inv... This is a prospective, observational study to investigate molecular mechanisms mediating the systemic inflammatory process, and changes to metabolism, and their impact on brain injury, survival, and functional outcomes after cardiac arrest. Investigators have shown that cardiac arrest induces changes in the numbers and properties of circulating immune cells, shifting the balance towards a pro-inflammatory phenotype and there is increased interest in the inflammatory pathways and the signaling me... Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Mortality rates of cardiac arrest range from 60-85%, and approximately 80% of survivors are initially comatose. Of those who survive, 50% are left with a permanent neurological disability, and only 10% are able to resume their former lifestyle. Early prognosis of comatose patients after cardiac arrest is critical for management of these patients, yet predicting outcome for these patients remains quite challenging.

This is a prospective, observational, multi-center cohort study of pediatric cardiac arrests.
The purpose of the study is to determine the association between chest compression mechanics (rate, depth, flow fraction, compression release) and patient outcomes. In addition, the investigators will determine the association of post cardiac arrest care with patient outcomes.

The FloPatch FP120 device is indicated for use for the noninvasive assessment of blood flow in the carotid artery. The FloPatch FP120 device uses ultrasound and the Doppler effect to non-invasively assess the flow of flood. In this study, the FloPatch FP120 will be applied to the neck at the location of the carotid artery on cardiac arrest patients in the emergency department. FloPatch FP120 data will be compared with arterial line blood pressure to assess for accuracy of pulse checks among card... Read More
