Gingivitis Clinical Trials

This exploratory study will consist of two parts: Phase 1 (sample collection/screening) and Phase 2 (sample collection/product efficacy testing). The purpose of Phase 1 is to understand the association of gingivitis to systemic biomarkers and to screen subjects for Phase 2. The aim of this 12-week clinical study is to evaluate the ability of an experimental mouthwash, containing 0.085 percent (%) Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as an adjunct to toothbrushing with a regular fluoride toothpaste, to improve gingival health and plaque accumulation compared to a regular fluoride toothpaste alone in participants with plaque-induced mild to moderate gingivitis. The goal of this study is to learn if dental infection control treatment delivered to older adult nursing home residents at their place of residence will result in : * improved dental health * reduced risk of pneumonia * better glucose control for diabetic patients compared to the pre-project dental and general health evaluations of residents and the pre-project facility incidence of pneumonia. Dental infection control treatment includes treating gum infections, stopping or slowing decay with fluoride, and assisting residents with effective tooth brushing and denture cleaning daily. Previous studies indicate dental infections can be inhaled and cause pneumonia or make diabetes worse. A shortage of dentists has limited care for nursing home residents. This project will allow dental hygienists and specially trained dental assistants to treat nursing home residents using telehealth methods (computers, cameras, internet, and telephone) to talk and work with dentists in different locations. The purpose of this research study is to develop a better way of measuring the health of patients' mouth using photographs and imaging software. The investigators will also study the specific effects of individual toothpastes and mouthwashes on oral health. Participants who have volunteered to be in the study will be asked to use a toothpaste or over a period of 7 days to 6 months. The investigators will determine the participants' oral plaque levels, gum health, and saliva (spit) production with clinical exams as well as photographs of the participants' mouths. It is the hope of the study team to find better ways of assessing the health of patients' mouths and to identify whether gum health can be improved by specific toothpastes or mouthwashes. Read Less

The study is a randomized clinical trial to compare the effectiveness of a dual light ultrasonic toothbrush on periodontal health in orthodontic patients undergoing surgery. Patients with cleft lip and palate undergo bone graft and orthognathic surgery. The study will compare the periodontal outcomes in patients who use these toothbrushes during the post-surgical period.
