Gut Flora Metabolite Reduction After Dietary Intervention (GRADY)
Recruiting
Our group has recently identified the association between gut-flora-mediated carnitine and phosphatidylcholine metabolism, specifically trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), and cardiovascular risk. This study investigates the ability for dietary intervention to modulate TMAO levels.

Community Benefit of No-charge Calcium Score Screening Program
Recruiting
Current approaches in primary prevention for cardiovascular disease are based on probabilistic approaches to estimate risk, using many of the widely available cardiovascular risks scores, with over 100 such scoring systems currently available throughout the world. The rationale for this practice is to select those individuals at greatest risk for more intense targets, reduce risk of treatment to those at minimal risk, and to maximize the cost-effectiveness of treatment. A recent Cochrane Systema... Read More

Biomechanical Precision Medicine Registry for Patients With and Without Heart Failure
Recruiting
In this single-center, longitudinal observational study, we will comprehensively examine clinical characteristics, proteomic, metabolomic, genomic and imaging data to better understand how different heart failure types may develop and progress over time. We will evaluate distinct sub-groups of heart failure (also known as heart failure phenotypes) and cardiomyopathies including amyloidosis with an ultimate goal of bringing the right medications and therapy to the right patients to optimize benef... Health Disparities in Prevalence of Hypertension Between Black and White Americans
Recruiting
This study will be the first to distinguish the relative contributions of sleep, circadian and behavioral mechanisms to the non-dipping BP profile in Black adults and will lay the groundwork for optimizing therapies dependent on mechanisms, such as targeting sleep, targeting circadian rhythmicity, or targeting behaviors, and raising the possibility that ideal therapy for hypertension (HTN) may differ by race. This research will ultimately help to improve health and survival in black populations... Read More

The Influence of Mitochondrial-Derived Reactive Oxygen Species on Racial Disparities in Neurovascular Function
Recruiting
Black individuals are at increased cardiovascular disease risk. The central goal of the study is to determine if mitochondrial reactive oxygen species influence blood vessel function and nervous system regulation of blood pressure differentially in black, compared to white individuals. These findings may help to explain a potential mechanism that contributes to racial disparities in blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk. A secondary goal is to determine if mitochondrial reactive oxygen... Read More

THC Crossover Study
Recruiting
This is a randomized, crossover study enrolling experienced dual cannabis-tobacco smokers (N=18) to describe the differences in THC and toxicant exposure, examining pharmacokinetic, subjective, and cardiovascular effects from smoking and vaping dry herb cannabis. This study will also examine the differences in toxicant exposure and cardiovascular disease risk between smoking cannabis and smoking tobacco cigarettes.

An Evaluation of Insomnia Treatment to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk in Patients With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Recruiting
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic, debilitating psychiatric disorder that is associated with an increased risk of death due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Most individuals with PTSD also have Insomnia Disorder. Sleep quality is also associated with risk factors for CVD. The objective of this study is to examine how insomnia contributes to CVD risk among people with PTSD. The investigators will also examine whether this risk can be decreased with treatment for Insomnia Disorder.

Doravirine Versus Integrase Inhibitors on Backbone of Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Alafenamide in HIV
Recruiting
This research application will explore the impact of the Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) doravirine in the setting of established Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) backbone [Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) / Emtricitabine (FTC) as a possible therapeutic strategy to minimize the detrimental impact of ART-related toxicities on metabolism and instigators of atherosclerosis. Given the possible favorable role of NNRTI in pathogenesis of HIV-related dyslipidemia an... Read More

Short-Term Cardiovascular Effects of E-Cigarettes: Influence of E-Liquid pH
Recruiting
This study will examine the short-term cardiovascular (CV) effects of e-liquid pH in a randomized, crossover clinical and behavioral pharmacology study of experienced adult e-cigarette users (N=21). The specific aim of the study is to assess the impact of changes in e-liquid pH on nicotine pharmacokinetics, cardiovascular, and subjective effects of e-cigarettes.

Racial Differences in Serum Sodium and Blood Pressure Regulation
Recruiting
Nearly nine-in-ten Americans overconsume salt. Black individuals are more prone to salt-sensitive hypertension. The central goal of the study is to determine if dietary sodium influences blood vessel function and nervous system regulation of blood pressure differentially in black, compared to white individuals. These findings may help to explain why high dietary salt causes increases in blood pressure more frequently in black, compared to white individuals. A secondary goal of this project is to...
