The purpose of this research is to look at the effect of massage therapy on the pain, anxiety, and quality of life that pediatric patients have after undergoing spinal fusion surgery. This is a single-site, prospective, randomized, interventional study design that will involve post-thoracic and post-lumbar spinal fusion surgeries of pediatric patients from 7 to 19 years of age that present to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. These patients will be identified prior to their scheduled spinal fusion surgery and recruited to enroll in the study. The planned spinal fusion surgeries are not considered part of this research project, but rather considered standard of care and would occur whether the patient is enrolled in this project or not. Enrolled participants will be followed during their inpatient stay and through their subsequent follow-up visits at weeks 2, 6, and 12. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a massage therapy group or a group that receives the standard (normal) care for recovery after surgery. The final study involvement will occur at week 16 (post-hospital discharge) where a study team member will administer a quality of life (PedsQL) questionnaire via phone or mail with the subject. Amblyopia is the most prevalent cause of reduced monocular visual acuity in children and young adults, with estimates of prevalence ranging from 1% to 5%. The most common associated amblyogenic risk factors are uncorrected anisometropia, strabismus, or a combination of these. In addition to reduced visual acuity, amblyopic patients may also have measurable dysfunction of accommodation, fixation, binocularity, vergence, reading fluency, depth perception, and contrast sensitivity. For the first time since the incorporation of atropine penalization into amblyopia management, physicians can now offer Luminopia, an FDA-approved dual action dichoptic treatment, to patients with amblyopia. Since the product became commercially available in November 2022, the number of patients on Luminopia therapy continues to grow. This presents a unique opportunity to gather real world evidence from a large number of patients, representative of how ophthalmologists and optometrists are applying this novel treatment in the real world. A registry of the clinical data associated with Luminopia treatment, with IRB oversight, will provide answers to key scientific questions using a large dataset. Read Less

Compared to the general population, individuals from underserved communities are more likely to receive low quality end-of-life care and unwanted, costly and burdensome treatments due in part to a lack of advance care planning (ACP; the process of discussing wishes for end-of-life care with loved ones/clinicians and documenting them in advance directives). This study will use existing, trusted, and respected social networks to evaluate two conversation-based tools intended to engage underserved individuals in discussions about end-of-life issue and motivate them to carry out ACP behaviors. Through this study, investigators will learn how best to engage underserved populations in ACP so as to: 1) increase the likelihood that patients from underserved communities will receive high-quality end-of-life care; 2) address health disparities related to end-of-life treatments; and 3) reduce unnecessary suffering for patients and their families. There are two study periods for the TCU JCOIN project. The primary aims of Study 1 (approved by the TCU IRB) are (1) to gather information from staff on the current treatment referral process within participating communities and (2) to learn about the existing interrelationships between medical and community behavioral health (CBH) providers. TCU IRB granted approval for Phase 1 on 11/07/19, approval number: 1920-60-AM1. Study 2 (under current review by the TCU IRB) includes recruitment across 18 community collaboration sites across 3 states; these communities will participate in the TCU Opioid-Treatment Linkage Model (O-TLM) protocol. The O-TLM is focused on best practices for improving screening, identifying and linking to MOUD providers, reducing stigma, and addressing other important factors that impact justice-involved individuals returning to their communities. Along with their agency records, information collected from justice-involved individuals within the target communities will be examined to assess O-TLM impact on improving public health and public safety outcomes. Furthermore, stakeholder staff across community organizations, including criminal justice and treatment agencies, will be asked to complete surveys on the O-TLM regarding its acceptability and adoption, as well as on best training strategies. This study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PLS240 in patients with hemodialysis-dependent end stage kidney disease (ESKD) and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). The study consists of two phases. First, a placebo-controlled, double-blind phase where patients will be randomly assigned to either receive dose-titrated PLS240 or matching placebo for 27 weeks. After the completion of the double-blind phase, patients will be eligible to enroll in the open-label extension phase, where they will receive dose-titrated PLS240 for an additional 26 weeks. Throughout the duration of the study, patients will be expected to attend multiple study visits where an investigator will collect blood, preform electrocardiograms (ECGs) and physical exams, and further assess the safety and efficacy of PLS240. Memantine may block receptors (parts of nerve cells) in the brain known to contribute to a decline in cognitive function. Giving memantine may make a difference in cognitive function (attention, memory, or other thought processes) in children and adolescents receiving brain radiation therapy to treat a primary central nervous system tumors. This phase III trial compares the effect of adding levocarnitine to standard chemotherapy vs. standard chemotherapy alone in protecting the liver in patients with leukemia or lymphoma. Asparaginase is part of the standard of care chemotherapy for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), lymphoblastic lymphoma (LL), and mixed phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL). However, in adolescent and young adults (AYA) ages 15-39 years, liver toxicity from asparaginase is common and often prevents delivery of planned chemotherapy, thereby potentially compromising outcomes. Some groups of people may also be at higher risk for liver damage due to the presence of fat in the liver even before starting chemotherapy. Patients who are of Japanese descent, Native Hawaiian, Hispanic or Latinx may be at greater risk for liver damage from chemotherapy for this reason. Carnitine is a naturally occurring nutrient that is part of a typical diet and is also made by the body. Carnitine is necessary for metabolism and its deficiency or absence is associated with liver and other organ damage. Levocarnitine is a drug used to provide extra carnitine. Laboratory and real-world usage of the dietary supplement levocarnitine suggests its potential to prevent or reduce liver toxicity from asparaginase. The overall goal of this study is to determine whether adding levocarnitine to standard of care chemotherapy will reduce the chance of developing severe liver damage from asparaginase chemotherapy in ALL, LL and/or MPAL patients. This study assesses how blood cell growth patterns (clonal hematopoiesis), relates to heart health or cardiovascular disease (CVD) after treatment in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. In some patients, cancer treatment at a young age may lead to later complications, including problems with heart health. Checking for blood cell growth patterns called therapy-related clonal hematopoiesis (t-CH) can help predict who might be at risk for heart health problems after Hodgkin lymphoma treatment. If doctors know who may be at greater risk for developing later heart complications, then they can more closely monitor those patients to prevent or detect heart complications early. Read Less
