Carboplatin Treatment Options in Alabama

The purpose of this research study is to : * Determine how effective cisplatin or carboplatin is in slowing the time it takes for ER negative (estrogen-receptor-negative), PR negative (progesterone receptor-negative), HER2 negative (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) breast cancer to progress. Cisplatin and carboplatin are anti-cancer chemotherapy drugs that stop cancer cells from growing abnormally and is used to treat other cancers. * Evaluate a new biomarker to help determine which breast cancers are most likely to respond to cisplatin chemotherapy The hypothesis is that Triple Negative metastatic breast cancer may be particularly sensitive to platinum, and that a subgroup of those patients may have a marker in their tumors that predicts response. This phase II trial is studying how well combination chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or surgery work in treating patients with high-risk kidney tumors. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Giving combination chemotherapy together with radiation therapy before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed. Read Less

Small cell lung cancer, or SCLC, constitutes approximately 15% of the 170,000 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed annually in the United States. Extensive-stage SCLC comprises two thirds of new cases and is generally considered sensitive to chemotherapy, despite a median time to progression of 4 months. SCLC is one of the most aggressive and lethal types of cancer, with a median survival of 9 months (range 7-11 months) in patients diagnosed with extensive disease. Overall, the majority of patients with SCLC die in less than 2 years (2-year survival rates generally less than 10%), and the 5-year survival rate is 2.3% for patients with extensive disease. The regimen of etoposide in combination with a platinum (cisplatin or carboplatin) is generally considered the "standard of care" although a recent Phase III trial suggests improved survival with the combination of cisplatin/irinotecan. Further evaluation of new agents in combination regimens attempting to overcome the intrinsic drug resistance seen in extensive-stage SCLC is warranted attempting to improve survival and achieve palliation of disease-related symptoms. RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Cetuximab may also stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. It is not yet known whether giving cetuximab together with carboplatin is more effective than giving cetuximab alone in treating metastatic breast cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying cetuximab and carboplatin to see how well they work compared with cetuximab alone in treating women with estrogen receptor-negative (ER-), progesterone receptor-negative (PR-) metastatic breast cancer. This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial will evaluate the efficacy and safety of carboplatin/paclitaxel and carboplatin/paclitaxel/bevacizumab with and without pictilisib in particpants with previously untreated advanced or recurrent non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Particpants will be randomized to receive 4 cycles of carboplatin (C)/paclitaxel (P) and either pictilisib or placebo, with (participants with non-squamous NSCLC) or without (participants with squamous NSCLC) bevacizumab (B). Anticipated time on study treatment is until disease progression or intolerable toxicity occurs. Participants in placebo arms with disease progression may cross over to open-label active pictilisib. This is a study to determine the optimal treatment for patients with advanced stage or recurrent endometrial cancer. Traditionally, patients have been treated with either hormonal therapies (megesterol) or chemotherapy (paclitaxel and carboplatin). This study investigates the effectiveness of the combination of hormonal therapy and chemotherapy. This randomized phase III trial is studying glutathione to see how well it works in preventing peripheral neuropathy caused by paclitaxel and carboplatin in patients with ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and/or primary peritoneal cancer. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Chemoprotective drugs, such as glutathione, may help prevent peripheral neuropathy caused by paclitaxel and carboplatin.
