RATIONALE: Imaging procedures, such as fludeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography (\^18FDG-PET), may improve the ability to detect disease progression and help doctors predict a patient's response to treatment and plan more effective treatment. RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Giving the drugs in different ways may kill more tumor cells. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Peripheral stem cell or bone marrow transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The purpose of this study is to look at the effects (good and bad) of the combination of docetaxel and carboplatin for patients who have progressive prostate cancer after chemotherapy with drugs such as docetaxel. This study is a Phase 3, global, multi-center, open-label study of patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer. Eligible patients will be randomly assigned to receive either pemetrexed plus carboplatin or etoposide plus carboplatin.
