Ixabepilone adds significantly to the antitumor effectiveness of capecitabine in both ER+ and triple negative breast cancer. Ixabepilone has substantial antitumor activity in taxane-refractory patients and novel combinations are needed in this poor prognosis population. Carboplatin in combination with gemcitabine or paclitaxel has activity in metastatic breast cancer (MBC); there is also demonstrated activity of the gemcitabine/carboplatin combination in the ER+ versus triple negative subsets. Taxol and carboplatin are commonly used drugs for the treatment of stage IIIB or IV non small cell lung carcinoma.
This study compares treatment with Taxol/carboplatin given every 3 weeks to a schedule where it is given weekly.
The purpose of the study is to determine the most effective and safe schedule for giving these drugs in non small cell lung carcinoma.

RATIONALE: Pemetrexed disodium may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Oth... Read More

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining chemotherapy and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells.
PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy and radiation therapy in treating patients who have limited-stage small cell lung cancer.
