Carboplatin Treatment Options in Pennsylvania

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. AZD2171 may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth and by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving gemcitabine and carboplatin together with AZD2171 may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well giving gemcitabine and carboplatin together with AZD2171 works compared to giving gemcitabine and carboplatin without AZD2171 as first-line therapy in treating patients with stage IIIB or stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. This randomized phase III trial is studying glutathione to see how well it works in preventing peripheral neuropathy caused by paclitaxel and carboplatin in patients with ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and/or primary peritoneal cancer. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Chemoprotective drugs, such as glutathione, may help prevent peripheral neuropathy caused by paclitaxel and carboplatin. This is a Phase IIb/III randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to compare the efficacy and safety of first-line therapy combined with TG4010 or placebo in stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). TG4010 is a suspension of recombinant Modified Vaccinia virus strain Ankara (MVA strain) carrying coding sequences for human MUC1 antigen and human interleukin-2 (IL2). TG4010 has been developed for use as an immunotherapy in cancer patients whose tumors express the MUC1 antigen. In recent years, there has been much interest in providing highly focused (focal) chemotherapy to a diseased organ including the liver, brain, and eye. With focused chemotherapy, the chemotherapy drugs are injected directly into the ophthalmic artery (the artery that supplies blood to the eye). Carboplatin in combination with gemcitabine or paclitaxel has activity in metastatic breast cancer (MBC); there is also demonstrated activity of the gemcitabine/carboplatin combination in the ER+ versus triple negative subsets.
