This study is investigating the effects of an experimental drug (neratinib) in combination with paclitaxel versus trastuzumab in combination with paclitaxel for the treatment of women who have not received previous treatment for erbB-2-positive locally recurrent or metastatic breast cancer. The study will compare the effectiveness of each regimen in shrinking tumors and extending the lives of women with erbB-2 (HER2) positive breast cancer. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Other types of monoclonal antibodies, such as cixutumumab, may find tumor cells and help kill them. It is not yet known whether giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) together with bevacizumab is more effective when given with or without cixutumumab in treating patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
