Senior Companion Programs (SCP) facilitate partnerships between community volunteers and local homebound seniors. Seniors served by the SCP will be provided with a companion who will conduct weekly visits with them, help with meal preparation or deliveries, provide transportation, assist with simple housekeeping, and socialize with the client amongst other tasks. These services are directed towards helping the senior client continue living independently in their own home instead of moving into an assisted living or nursing home. The SCP model is being evaluated to determine the impact of the services on the client's overall well-being and independent living status. Read Less

The aim of this 10-week pilot study is to explore the potential benefit of two recently developed non-invasive interventions, heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) and OTC supplement hydrogen water, for the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Symptom measures and heart monitoring information will be generated by this study. Given the lack of effective treatments in this illness, these two non-invasive home-based treatments may help patients feel and function better. Read Less

This study is being done to understand body's response to hybrid home-based and on-site rehabilitation program utilizing individually tailored exercises throughout a total of 18 sessions with 12 of them occurring onsite, in people with and without chronic respiratory diseases, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and in individuals recovered from COVID-19. Exercise training programs vary widely for people with COPD, OSA, and during prolonged recovery from COVID infection. EpiBone-Craniomaxillofacial (EB-CMF) is an autologous, anatomically shaped bone graft created specifically for the patient's defect, using the patients own adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells. This first in human trial is designed specifically to assess the safety of EB-CMF clinically. Clinical and preclinical studies confirm that regeneration of supporting tissues of teeth lost due to periodontal disease can be achieved using the principles of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Although this therapeutic approach is well established in clinical settings and can rescue teeth with poor or questionable prognosis, MIS approaches often suffer from lack of predictability due to poor intraoral visibility of the bony lesion and inability to confirm thorough removal of etiological factors (plaque/calculus) on tooth surfaces. We seek to investigate whether improved visualization of the surgical field using an FDA approved videoscope (V) improves clinical outcomes. For this pilot study, N=50 (to attain 10/group) age, sex matched, systemically healthy subjects diagnosed with Stage III, Grade B periodontitis, formerly known as severe chronic periodontitis, will be randomly assigned to either the VMIS (Test), MIS (Control 1) or Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR, Control 2) group. All periodontal therapy will be performed following the Standard of Care for periodontal regeneration to determine if utilization of the videoscope improves clinical and radiographic outcomes. We will examine bone fill using conventional digital periapical radiographs (PAR) and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging at 6 and 12 months compared to baseline and collect gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) to compare expression of growth factors and cytokines/chemokines during the healing period. This is a single center treatment study where subjects will be recruited from individuals seeking periodontal treatment at the Graduate Periodontics Clinic, UIC College of Dentistry (COD). Surgical treatment for patients with a fracture of the ankle or distal radius is commonly offered on an outpatient basis. Patients are routinely discharged from hospital within 4 hours of their procedure. The surgery is commonly performed under peripheral nerve block with sedation, or under general anesthesia with postoperative peripheral nerve block, (if required for analgesic purposes). It is unclear which of these two strategies offers patients superior pain relief in the first few days following surgery. The aim of the study is to assess the performance of Aquyre Biopsy Scanner technology (the FDA class I medical device) at determining if tissue from the lymph nodes and lung nodules, taken during a bronchoscopy procedure, is adequate for a diagnosis. The study will assess how well the Aquyre Biopsy Scanner can differentiate between tissue samples that meet certain requirements that allow for further diagnostic analysis and samples that do not. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death among trauma patients accounting for one-third of all trauma mortalities. Patients who survive the initial trauma are liable to secondary insults from the ensuing inflammatory state in the brain. Treatment goals are aimed at reducing secondary injury. Maintaining adequate brain perfusion, limiting cerebral edema, and optimizing oxygen delivery are part of established treatment protocols. Numerous therapeutics have been evaluated as potential treatment for TBI with very limited success and there is no medication that alters survival. Various novel therapeutic options have been investigated to prevent the secondary brain injury. Remote Ischemic Conditioning (RIC) is one of these therapies. RIC involves decreasing blood flow to a normal tissue usually the arm by inflating the blood pressure cuff 30mmHg over the systolic blood pressure. The decreased blood flow or ischemia is maintained for 5 minutes followed by releasing the pressure and re-perfusion of the arm. This cycle is usually repeated 4 times. RIC has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with heart attacks, strokes, elective neurosurgeries. A prospective observational study and a randomized clinical trial has shown the protective effect of RIC in TBI patients. Additionally, multiple studies in animals have shown that RIC is neuroprotective after TBI. RIC is non-invasive and harmless except for a little discomfort in the arm. This will be a randomized controlled clinical trial in patients who have undergone primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and University of Chicago Medical Center. Study subjects will receive either a shared decision aid (SDA) about pain management or standard of care at the time of discharge. The impact of the SDA on the number of leftover opioid pills on postoperative day 30 and average NRS pain score on postoperative day 7 will be assessed. Read Less

Salt sensitive hypertension is a significant health problem worldwide and a primary modifiable risk factor for renal, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases. Yet, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The proposed study determines how renal oxygenation and substrate metabolism differs between individuals with and without salt sensitivity, with the ultimate goal of identifying mechanisms, diagnostic criteria, and treatment strategies for salt sensitive hypertension. It is intended to test the products against natural populations of mosquito species of public health importance within the genera Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex, and to replace data from one site previously tested in Florida with data from a site in Louisiana with adequate landing pressure from target mosquito species of public health relevance.
