Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal degeneration caused by one of several mistakes in the genetic code. Such mistakes are called mutations. The mutations cause degeneration of rod photoreceptors which are responsible for vision in dim illumination resulting in night blindness. After rod photoreceptors are eliminated, gradual degeneration of cone photoreceptors occurs resulting in gradual constriction of side vision that eventually causes tunnel vision. Oxidative stress contributes to cone degeneration. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reduces oxidative stress and in animal models of RP it slowed cone degeneration. In a phase I clinical trial in patients with RP, NAC taken by month for 6 months caused some small improvements in two different vision tests suggesting that long-term administration of NAC might slow cone degeneration in RP. NAC Attack is a clinical trial being conducted at many institutions in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe designed to determine if taking NAC for several years provides benefit in patients with RP. A subset of young adults participating in the American Lung Association (ALA) Lung Health Cohort (LHC) will be imaged using Hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI to assess lung structure and function. Images will be used to improve the understanding of lung health and early lung abnormalities that may lead to chronic lung disease. Read Less

The gut microbiome refers to the trillions of bacteria that inhabit the stomach and other regions involved in the digestion of food, including the intestines. Compelling studies of animals (rodents) suggest that the health of the gut microbiome may influence skeletal muscle function and exercise performance. To date, there have been no similar observations reported in humans. A common experimental approach in animal studies to temporarily disrupt the gut microbiome is through the use of antibiotic therapies. Azithromycin is an antibiotic medicine prescribed to humans for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by bacteria. The purpose of the proposed project is to determine the influence of short-term (5-days) antibiotic therapy (azithromycin) on exercise performance in young, healthy adults. Treadmill exercise performance will be compared in two groups of adults before and after 5-days ingestion of azithromycin, or a placebo (something that has no physical effect). Read Less

The current study is a prospective blinded study to collect data regarding the performance of the WP device in detecting sleep disorders. For that purpose, the WP with finger probe and chest sensor will be worn by the subject simultaneous to PSG in a sleep study at the clinical sleep lab. A PSG system will be recording the PSG data. The goal of this clinical trial is to learn more about the interaction between a patient in the hospital and their treating doctor. A good relationship between patients and their doctors can help improve patient care. Doctors will be asked to use strategies to improve their interactions with patients in the hospital. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Will using the intervention strategies improve doctors' empathy towards their patients? * Will using the intervention strategies lead to improved scores in patient views of doctors' empathy? There will be 2 study arms. One group of doctors will be asked to use the intervention strategies. The other group of doctors will provide care as they would normally. Researchers will compare the doctors in the intervention arm to those in the control arm. Doctors are the primary subjects for this study. The doctors in both study arms will be asked to do the following: 1. Allow study staff to observe the interaction between them and their patients. 2. Complete a brief survey at the end of their 2-week work rotation. Doctors who are in the intervention arm will be asked to use suggested strategies when visiting with patients in the hospital. Patients are secondary subjects for this study. Patients of participating doctors may be asked to do the following: 1. Allow study staff to observe the interaction between them and their doctors. 2. Polyphenol-rich Haskap berries (Haskap) have untapped therapeutic potential to improve human health, and agricultural producers in northern U.S. states are poised to increase production if consumer demand increases. A critical knowledge gap is that little is known about the interactions between gut microbes and Haskap polyphenols to produce bioactive metabolites linked to downstream health impacts. Additionally, little is known about which Haskap varieties and harvest timing yield the greatest bioactive potential. This study aims to address these gaps by investigating the interaction of bioactive components in Haskap with gut microbiota and the resultant gut and serum metabolites, inflammation, and metabolic health, and then couple this with analysis of berries from different Haskap varieties and harvest times. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect and safety of efgartigimod PH20 SC compared to placebo in adults with systemic sclerosis. The study consists of a screening period, a treatment period of up to 48 weeks and a safety follow-up period. After the screening period, eligible participants will be randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive either efgartigimod PH20 SC or placebo. The total study duration can be up to approximately 15 months. The goal of this clinical trial is to collect capsule images for the development of CADe software for use with the CapsoCam® Colon (CV-3E) in healthy volunteers who have been referred for colonoscopy.
