The JUMPSTART Program: Encouraging Early Mobilization and Optimizing Recovery of TAVR Patients' Post-hospital Discharge
Recruiting
A virtual, self-directed, and tailored early mobilization program called JUMPSTART, that aims to bridge cardiac rehabilitation intake for post-TAVR patients has been developed at the Hamilton General Hospital. The program includes a series of exercise videos at varying levels of intensity, designed for patients to follow at home, post-discharge. JUMPSTART is currently being offered as part of clinical care. In this new pilot study, the study team plans to develop and test new strategies to optim... Read More

Patient-reported Outcomes for Patients Undergoing Surgery at Shouldice Hospital.
Recruiting
Background:
Previous publications have highlighted limited data on patient outcomes and experiences at Shouldice Hospital. Existing studies from Europe reported outcomes following Shouldice repair but lacked recent data. The current project seeks to optimize patient care and knowledge through systematic follow-up.
Study Objectives:
Establish a patient-reported outcome measure follow-up program. Evaluate postoperative complication rates. Determine important outcomes to patients. Establish and... Read More

Quality of Life After Shouldice Repair
Recruiting
This research project aims to assess the quality of life (QOL) and pain/discomfort experienced by patients who have undergone primary inguinal hernia repair at Shouldice Hospital. Historically, postoperative mortality and symptom improvement have been the main outcomes assessed after hernia surgery, neglecting the patient experience. As QOL gains significance in hernia patient care, this study focuses on evaluating patient QOL before and after surgery, contributing to a better understanding of h... Read More

SMART Concussion Trial: Symptom Management vs Alternative Randomized Treatment of Concussion Trial
Recruiting
Given the rising rates of concussion in youth ages 10-19 and the significant proportion of young people who remain symptomatic for months following concussion, research evaluating the efficacy of multifaceted treatment options following concussion is imperative. Studies examining the efficacy of treatment strategies following concussion in children and adults are surprisingly limited, and most focus on one treatment approach, have small sample sizes, are not randomized controlled trials, and foc... Preference Comparisons for Algorithms to Hear Speech
Recruiting
Twenty people with hearing impairment will be tested and fitted binaurally with hearing aids. During a real-world listening situation, each participant will be asked to compare one program with a novel algorithm to one with a standard microphone configuration. They will provide ratings on a range of outcome measures including overall preference and awareness of background noise. Overall and specific preferences for the different programs/algorithms will be determined by their subjective response... Read More

Evaluating the Use of a Bioinductive Graft in Treating Massive Rotator Cuff Tears
Recruiting
The rotator cuff is a complex of 4 tendons that aid in stabilizing and moving the shoulder. Rotator cuff tears are common shoulder injuries in adults. While some tears can be managed by physiotherapy, other rotator cuff tears will require surgery. On occasion, when a person has had a large rotator cuff tear for a long period of time, the tear can grow and the tendons retract. This effect makes it very difficult for the tendons to be repaired to their normal spot.
The most common surgical techni... Read More

Intratympanic N-Acetylcysteine for Prevention of Cisplatin-induced Ototoxicity.
Recruiting
Although many intratympanic agents have been attempted, N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) appears to be the most promising and is a powerful, commonly used anti-oxidant. The goal of this prospective phase 2 randomized controlled trial is to determine the optimal dosage and effectiveness of intratympanic NAC injection in reducing hearing loss in head \& neck cancer patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy with curative intent.

Switching From Twice-Daily to Once-Daily Clozapine Dosing in Schizophrenia
Recruiting
Plasma half-life has routinely been used to establish the dosing schedule of antipsychotics; for example, it is recommended that agents with a short plasma half-life be administered multiple times per day. However, to date, several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown no differences in clinical outcomes between once- and twice-daily dosing of various antipsychotics, suggesting that once-daily dosing of antipsychotics is a viable option regardless of plasma half-life. This would apply t... Read More

Comparison of Functional Outcomes Between Transanal and Laparoscopic vs Open Ileal Pouch-Anal Anastomosis
Recruiting
Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and inflammatory bowel unclassified (IBDu) are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) involving the colon and rectum. It is a chronic disease occurring in young people with a high burden on social and professional life. Although treated medically by immunomodulatory drugs, about 15 - 20% of UC patients will need an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). In primary cases, this procedure is usually performed laparoscopically (further called transabdominal IPAA or tabd-... Read More

Acute Responses to Exercise in Females and Males With Symptomatic Atrial Fibrillation
Recruiting
The main purpose of this pilot project is to measure the feasibility of conducting a randomized crossover study examining short-term changes in atrial fibrillation (AF) symptoms in symptomatic females and males with paroxysmal or persistent AF when they engage in a standard week of exercise (i.e. moderate-intensity continuous training \[MICT\] or high-intensity interval training \[HIIT\]) compared to a control week (i.e. no moderate to vigorous exercise over 7 days).

Tranexamic Acid in Chronic Subdural Hematomas
Recruiting
BACKGROUND Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is one of the most frequent reasons for cranial neurosurgical consult. There is no widely accepted medical treatment for CSDH.
This trial will investigate whether Tranexamic Acid (TXA) can increase the rate of CSDH resolution following conservative management, lower the number of required surgical procedures and decrease the rate of CSDH recurrence following surgical evacuation. TRACS is a double blind, randomized, parallel-design, placebo-controlled,... Read More
