Longitudinal Multi-Omic Profiles to Reveal Mechanisms of Obesity-Mediated Insulin Resistance
Recruiting
This 12-week controlled diet and weight intervention study seeks to define the molecular pathways that link excess body weight to the development of insulin resistance (IR). Blood, adipose and stool are sampled at three timepoints; baseline, peak weight (4 weeks) and post weight loss to monitor changes in cellular processes. Additionally, direct insulin sensitivity testing, and radiological measurement of visceral fat and intrahepatic fat content is measured at three timepoints to correlate clin... Read More

Role of Nutrient Transit in Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycemia
Recruiting
Severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)after gastric bypass surgery is an increasingly recognized condition, characterized by symptoms of hypoglycemia after eating and inappropriately elevated insulin concentrations that occur at the time of hypoglycemia. Severe hypoglycemia can be dangerous and debilitating and can also impact cognitive function. At the moment no medical therapies have been developed for this disorder. Determining why some but not other patients develop this condition would allow... Read More

Characteristics of Patients With Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa
Recruiting
Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a disease caused by genetic mutations in the gene for type VII collagen. Patients with RDEB develop large, severely painful blisters and open wounds from minor trauma to their skin. We are screening subjects with RDEB to evaluate characteristics of the subjects and their cells in order to develop new strategies of therapy and determine whether subjects could be candidates for treatment studies.

The GAstric Precancerous Conditions Study
Recruiting
Gastric cancer afflicts 27,000 Americans annually and carries a dismal prognosis. One reason for poor outcomes is late diagnosis, as the majority of gastric cancers in the United States are diagnosed at a relatively advanced stage where curative resection is unlikely. Gastric precursors (such as atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia) are precancerous changes to the stomach mucosa which increases risk for subsequent gastric cancer.
The Gastric Precancerous Conditions Study (GAPS) is an ob... Read More

AN/BN Risk Factors Study
Recruiting
Across the United States, thousands of children and adolescents suffer from eating disorders. Among young women alone, an estimated 2 to 4 percent are dealing with anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa also has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder and produces a six-fold increased risk for death. Unfortunately, study shows that current treatments are only successful with 25 percent of patients and no eating disorder prevention program has been found to reduce future onset of anore... The Dynamics of Human Atrial Fibrillation
Recruiting
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an enormous public health problem in the United States, affecting 2-5 million Americans and causing rapid heart beats, stroke, heart failure or death. In this project, the applicant will develop a novel framework to better understand human AF that builds on agreement between several concepts for the disease. The applicant will develop strategies to identify AF patients who will best respond to each of several therapies, to guide personalized therapy.

Machine Learning in Atrial Fibrillation
Recruiting
Atrial fibrillation is a serious public health issue that affects over 5 million Americans (Miyazaka, Circulation 2006) in whom it may cause skipped beats, dizziness, stroke and even death. Therapy for AF is currently suboptimal, in part because AF represents several disease states of which few have been delineated or used to successfully guide management. This study seeks to clarify this delineation of AF types using machine learning (ML).
