Far Red Light to Improve Functioning in PAD
Recruiting
The LIGHT PAD Trial is a Phase II multi-centered randomized clinical trial to collect preliminary data to test whether daily far red light treatment of the lower extremities in people with PAD improves six-minute walk distance, lower extremity perfusion, and ischemia-related damage in gastrocnemius muscle at four-month follow-up, compared to a sham control. Participants will complete 10 minutes of twice daily home treatment with either far red light or a sham light for four months.

The Effect of Intermittent Fasting on Brain Health
Recruiting
The central hypothesis of this study is that closer adherence to time restricted eating (TRE) will improve endothelial function, neurovascular (NVC) responses, resulting in improved cognitive performance, potentially through activation of SIRT1-dependent vasoprotective pathways.

Nicotinamide Riboside for Treating Elevated Systolic Blood Pressure and Arterial Stiffness in Middle-aged and Older Adults
Recruiting
Aging is the primary risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the number one cause of death in developed societies. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) increase with age and is a key intermediary factor linking aging to increased CVD risk. The primary mechanisms underlying the age-associated increase in SBP is stiffening of the large elastic arteries, which is mediated by increases in oxidative stress, inflammation, and vascular smooth muscle tone. Regular caloric restriction is effective at low... Read More

Isa-Pom-Dex in Elderly/Frail Subjects With RRMM
Recruiting
This research study aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the combination of isatuximab, pomalidomide, and dexamethasone (Isa-Pd) for the treatment of relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM), which refers to multiple myeloma that has returned or has not responded to prior treatment. The study will specifically investigate the impact of administering lower-than-standard doses of pomalidomide and dexamethasone. Using lower doses of pomalidomide and dexamethasone in this setting h... Read More

Improving Communication for Cancer Treatment: Addressing Concerns of Older Cancer Patients and Caregivers
Recruiting
To improve patient-centered outcomes for older patients with cancer considering or receiving chemotherapy and their caregivers. To do this, the project team will (a) establish the effectiveness of GA on communication about age-related concerns, patient and caregiver satisfaction with communication about age-related concerns, quality of life, and patient-reported side effects of chemotherapy; (b) evaluate the success of the implementation strategies on the adoption, reach, and fidelity of impleme... Optimal Timing of Computerized Cognitive Training for Older Intensive Care Unit Survivors
Recruiting
More than 60% of intensive care unit (ICU) patients are adults ages 60 and older, who are at high risk for ICU-acquired cognitive impairment. After ICU discharge, ICU survivors often experience sleep disturbances and inactivity, and almost 80% of ICU patients experience disturbances in circadian rhythm, which may affect cognitive function. Understanding the optimal, chronotherapeutic timing of cognitive interventions is crucial to promote circadian realignment and cognitive function, and may imp... Read More

Rapalog Pharmacology (RAP PAC) Study
Recruiting
The objective of RAP PAC is to identify safe and effective weekly dose(s) for the mTOR inhibitors sirolimus and everolimus that intervene on the underlying fundamental biology of aging. Participants who are 55-89 years old that are free of overt chronic diseases will be assigned to either 6 weeks of sirolimus or everolimus (5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg once per week). The investigators will complete the everolimus arm first and then subsequently complete the sirolimus arm of the study. Total time on st... Read More

Oral Hygiene in Assisted Living
Recruiting
This project will modify a program that reduces pneumonia among nursing home residents with dementia, so that it is appropriate for assisted living residents with dementia. The program provides daily mouth care to reduce bacteria in the mouth that lead to aspiration pneumonia. The project will develop methods that can be taught to assisted living providers by community dental hygienists, and that are ready for evaluation in a pragmatic trial of AL residents with dementia and the staff who provid... Gerofit and Cognition
Recruiting
Over 50% of the Veterans enrolled for VA health care are over the age of 65. Dementia prevalence increases with age, and with the increase in the population of people ages 65 and older, the total number of people with dementia is also increasing. Older Veterans often have comorbid PTSD, major depression and traumatic brain injury so that they are at 2 to 5 times the risk for cognitive impairment and dementia compared to the general population. There is evidence that exercise interventions in sed... Read More

Non-invasive Nerve Stimulation and Cognitive Training to Improve Cognitive Performance in Healthy Older Adults
Recruiting
We need better tools to both enhance brain health and improve cognitive performance in healthy brain aging so that it can be delayed, reduced, or even reversed. The present proposal is designed to evaluate the pairing of cognitive training with a non-invasive neurostimulation technology that has shown promise in both increasing neuroplasticity and in enhancing cognitive performance, transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS).

Effects of Nicotine and Attention on Frequency Tuning in Auditory Cortex
Recruiting
Nicotine enhances auditory-cognitive function because it mimics the brain's system for "paying attention" to important sounds amid distractions (for example, understanding speech in a noisy environment). In part, nicotine does this by activating inhibitory neurons in the auditory cortex. Since age-related hearing deficits result, in part, from the loss of inhibitory neurons in auditory cortex, this project will determine whether nicotine's effects can compensate for reduced inhibition in the agi...
