Passive Limb Movement: A Tool to Assess Vascular Health and Guide Rehabilitation
Recruiting
Brief Summary:
Current U.S. Veteran demographics reveal an aging population with significant cardiovascular dysfunction. This ultimately manifests as mobility limitation, inactivity, and a subsequent worsening of cardiovascular disease (CVD) that often leads to death. However, despite this clear negative cycle of events, there is not a single clinically accepted, and therefore routinely utilized, method of assessing vascular health. As nitric oxide (NO) is anti-atherogenic and cardioprotective,... Read More

Reducing Blood Pressure in Mid-life Adult Binge Drinkers
Recruiting
This study has two phases:
Phase 1 is to examine blood pressure, microvascular function, and sympathetic nerve activity in mid-life adult binge drinkers vs. alcohol abstainers/moderate drinkers.
Phase 2 is to examine the effect of 8-week aerobic exercise training on blood pressure, microvascular function, and sympathetic nerve activity in mid-life adult binge drinkers

Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training for Lowering Blood Pressure and Improving Endothelial Function in Postmenopausal Women: Comparison With "Standard of Care" Aerobic Exercise
Recruiting
High blood pressure (BP) is the major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and related health conditions, particularly among postmenopausal (PM) women. In adults age ≥50 years this risk is primarily driven by above-normal systolic BP (SBP ≥120 mmHg), as diastolic BP plateaus, then decreases in older adulthood. Although SBP is lower in premenopausal women vs. age-matched men, SBP reaches, then surpasses men after age 60. As such, >75% of PM women in the U.S. have above-normal... Read More

Executive Functioning Training Study
Recruiting
Cognitive aging in people with HIV (PWH) is of increasing concern for several reasons: 1) between 52%-59% of PWH experience cognitive impairment known as HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) which impacts everyday functioning and quality of life; 2) HAND increases in severity and prevalence with age; and 3) 70% of PWH in the United States will be 50 and older by 2030. Fortunately, cognitive training programs can individually target specific cognitive impairments in PWH and possibly redu... Read More

Bioenergetic Effects of Aging and Menopause (BEAM)
Recruiting
The menopause transition is associated with increased risk for weight gain and a shift toward storing fat in the belly region, which may increase risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The study will determine whether the stress hormone cortisol contributes to this shift.

Feasibility of Home-based tDCS for Older Adults at Risk of Falling
Recruiting
In this project, the investigators propose to demonstrate the feasibility of remotely-monitored, caregiver (or spouse)-administered, home-based tDCS intervention to improve mobility in ambulatory older adults with recent falls. This is a three-phase feasibility study in older, ambulatory adult participants at risk of falling due to a loss of balance (participant faller, PF) together with a willing and able participant administrator (PA) that is available during weekdays to administer tDCS (trans... Optimization of a Behavioral Intervention to Increase Physical Activity in Older Adults Living With HIV
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to examine 3 interventions designed to increase physical activity in older adults with HIV. We will examine 3 potential components of an intervention package: physical activity coaching, cognitive behavioral therapy targeted toward common barriers to physical activity such as low motivation or chronic pain, and a Fitbit-based social support intervention. Our primary outcome will be physical activity, defined as steps per day. Results will guide choice of interv... Read More

Fisetin to Improve Vascular Function in Older Adults
Recruiting
This is a pilot clinical trial to test the efficacy of intermittent treatment with the flavonoid compound fisetin for improving vascular endothelial function and reducing aortic stiffness in older adults. This trial will also determine the potential mechanisms by which fisetin may improve vascular function, including by decreasing mitochondrial oxidative stress, cellular senescence and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) factors in circulation. Lastly, safety, tolerability and adher... Read More
