Studying an Investigational Medication's Impact on Cardiovascular Events
Recruiting
The main objectives of this Phase 3 study are to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication's ability to reduce major adverse cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks and strokes) in adults at risk. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the investigational medication or a placebo. Finger Movement Training After Stroke
Recruiting
Human development as a species has been strongly associated with the ability to dexterously manipulate objects and tools. Unfortunately, current therapy efforts typically fail to restore fine manual control after stroke. The goal of this study is to evaluate a new intervention that would combine targeted electrical stimulation of selected nerves with use a soft, pneumatically actuated hand exoskeleton to enhance repetitive practice of independent movements of the fingers and thumb in order to im... Escitalopram and Language Intervention for Subacute Aphasia
Recruiting
In this project, the investigators will investigate the effects of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), escitalopram, on augmenting language therapy effectiveness, as measured by naming untrained pictures and describing pictures, in individuals with aphasia in the acute and subacute post stroke period (i.e., within three months post stroke).

Single Dose Monoaminergic Drive in Stroke
Recruiting
This study investigates the effects of Tizanidine on the voluntary movement controls of the arms of participants who have had a stroke and have not had a stroke by measuring medication-induced changes in upper extremity kinematics, pupillometry, and brain activity. Tizanidine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Understanding how different areas of the brain are involved in movement impairments may help rehabilitation efforts and assist in restoring healthy movement in individua... Read More

Human-Machine System for the H2 Lower Limb Exoskeleton
Recruiting
This research study will investigate the use of smart lower limb robotic exoskeleton (developed by the CSIC, Spain) in rehabilitation after stroke. It will compare robotic-assisted rehabilitation with supervised motor practice. Additionally, it will also examine the use of noninvasive scalp electroencephalography (EEG) to learn specific brain wave patterns associated with learning to walk on the powered lower limb exoskeleton. The findings will be used to understand human-robot interaction and t... Read More

Recruiting
This is a prospective, open-label, cluster-randomized controlled trial of 400 participants (aged 60 years or older, with additional stroke risk factors and 'actionable' undertreated AF) from a total of 40 retail and outpatient community pharmacies. Participants will be randomized (by pharmacy) to either to an intervention arm of pharmacist-led OAC management versus an enhanced usual care arm, wherein physicians receive notification of 'actionable' AF and patients are advised to schedule a physic... Error-enhanced Learning & Recovery in 2 & 3 Dimensions
Recruiting
This study is being done to see how errors lead to improvement. Specifically, we are evaluating the errors stroke participants make during an upper extremity exercise program when reaching for a target using their affected arm. Once we understand the participant's reaching errors, we plan to create a customized reaching exercise according to the individual's specific error tendencies which will lead to better performance on movement ability after training.

Responses to Backward Walking Training Post-Stroke
Recruiting
Approximately 15,000 Veterans are hospitalized for stroke each year with new cases costing an estimated $111 million for acute inpatient, $75 million for post-acute inpatient, and $88 million for follow-up care over 6 months post-stroke. The investigators have previously established the effectiveness of a backward walking training program to improve gait and balance in post-stroke Veterans. To best serve Veterans in this era of personalized medicine, there is a current need to determine the appr... Read More

The goal of this phase I/II clinical trial is to determine the behavioral and neural effects of 5-daily transcranial direct current stimulation on post-stroke fatigue. The three aims are:
Aim 1: Investigate the behavioral effect of 5 daily sessions of anodal tDCS over the ipsilesional M1 on PSF.
Aim 2: Investigate the neurophysiological effect of 5 daily sessions of anodal tDCS over the ipsilesional M1.
Aim 3: Determine the relationship between changes in M1 excitability, brain connectivity a... Read More

PCMS Task After Moderate-to-severe Stroke
Recruiting
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are conducting a research study to see how combining brain, nerve, and hand stimulation affect hand movement after stroke. The primary purpose of this study is to examine changes in the connection between the brain and the weak hand muscles after the combined brain, nerve, and hand stimulation. The primary hypothesis is that the combined brain, nerve, and hand stimulation will increase the the connection between the brain and the weak hand muscles. The... Read More
