Carboplatin Treatment Options in Tampa, FL

The standard treatment for non-small cell lung cancer, stage IV or IIIB malignant pleural effusion is chemotherapy. The decision to use a regimen is currently determined by toxicity or by physician's preference. In this protocol, the treatment regimen will be assigned based on the patients' tumor molecular profile. A tumor molecular profile analysis will allow the physician to define a specific molecular portrait that shows the genetic basis of the tumor. The purpose of this research study was to evaluate how effective the combination of Carboplatin, Bevacizumab (Avastin™) and, Pemetrexed (Alimta™) is in the treatment of patients with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM). A combination of cisplatin and pemetrexed is considered standard for this disease and typically off protocol patients would receive cisplatin or carboplatin and pemetrexed as standard of care. The planned length of the study (first patient screened to last patient enrolled) was 24 months. This is a single institution Phase II study for patients with unresectable Stage IIIA and IIIB non-small cell lung cancer. The treatment started with 2 cycles of gemcitabine and carboplatin followed by concurrent chemotherapy with radiation. The chemoradiation included using paclitaxel and carboplatin with daily thoracic radiation to a total dose of 74 Gy. RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if carboplatin is more effective with or without liposomal doxorubicin in treating recurrent ovarian epithelial or primary peritoneal cancer. This randomized phase III trial studies carboplatin, paclitaxel, and sorafenib tosylate to see how well they work compared to carboplatin and paclitaxel in treating patients with stage III or stage IV melanoma that cannot be removed by surgery. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as carboplatin and paclitaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Sorafenib tosylate may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth and by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Combining chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more tumor cells. Isotretinoin may be effective in preventing recurrence of glioma. It is not yet known which regimen of chemotherapy plus autologous stem cell transplantation with or without isotretinoin is more effective in treating recurrent high-grade glioma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying high-dose chemotherapy or intermediate-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation to see how well it works compared to high-dose chemotherapy or intermediate-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation and isotretinoin in treating young patients with recurrent high-grade glioma. RATIONALE: Amifostine may be an effective treatment for the toxic side effects caused by radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy and radiation therapy are more effective with or without amifostine for non-small cell lung cancer.
