RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Monoclonal antibodies, such as trastuzumab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Lapatinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. It is not yet known whether docetaxel and carboplatin are more effective when given together with trastuzumab and/or lapatinib in treating women with stage I, stage II, or stage III breast cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well docetaxel and carboplatin work when given together with trastuzumab and/or lapatinib in treating women with stage I, stage II, or stage III breast cancer that can be removed by surgery. This study is designed to investigate the possibility that use of two similar but distinct drugs used together in treatment of advanced cancer might prove less toxic than either agent used alone, because dosages can be reduced for each agent. The purpose of this study is to determine the safety, tolerability and efficacy of combretastatin A4 phosphate (CA4P), also known as fosbretabulin, in combination with bevacizumab (Avastin), carboplatin and paclitaxel in patients with chemotherapy naïve non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This is a randomized parallel arm study. All participants will receive carboplatin, paclitaxel and bevacizumab, and half will additionally receive CA4P. Patients who complete the first 6 cycles of therapy and have not experienced disease progression will receive maintenance therapy with bevacizumab alone or with bevacizumab plus CA4P. The rationale for this study is the potential additive or synergistic actions of vascular disrupting agents like CA4P with anti-angiogenic agents like bevacizumab. Read Less
