Chemotherapy and Whole-Brain Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Primary Central Nervous System Non- Hodgkin's Lymphoma
Completed
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining radiation therapy with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells and may be an effective treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy and whole-brain radiation therapy in patients with primary central nervous system non-Hodgkin's lymph... Read More

Radiation Therapy and High-Dose Corticosteroids in Treating Older Patients With Primary CNS Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
Completed
RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining radiation therapy with a corticosteroid, such as dexamethasone, may be an effective treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of radiation therapy and high-dose dexamethasone in treating older patients with primary CNS non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Gabapentin in Preventing Nausea and Vomiting in Patients Receiving Chemotherapy
Completed
RATIONALE: Gabapentin may prevent or reduce delayed nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. It is not yet known whether gabapentin is more effective than a placebo in preventing nausea and vomiting.
PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying the side effects of gabapentin and to see how well it works compared with a placebo in preventing nausea and vomiting in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Combination Chemotherapy in Treating Patients With Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma or Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia
Completed
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more cancer cells.
PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy and alternating regimens of chemotherapy in treating patients who have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Melphalan and Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Followed By Bortezomib and Dexamethasone in Treating Patients With Previously Untreated Systemic Amyloidosis
Completed
The purpose of this study in patients needing treatment for AL amyloidosis is to see how well treatment with IV melphalan works and then, if some clonal plasma cells are still present about 2 to 3 months after melphalan treatment, to see how well treatment with bortezomib and dexamethasone works to reduce the rest of the clonal plasma cell disease.

The Effects of Hypercapnia, Supplemental Oxygen, and Dexamethasone on Surgical Wound Infection
Completed
The investigators will test the hypotheses that mild hypercapnia and supplemental oxygen reduce wound infection risk in patients undergoing colon resection. The investigators will simultaneously test the hypothesis that low-dose dexamethasone (a common treatment for postoperative nausea and vomiting) does not increase infection risk.

Pomalidomide, Dexamethasone and Rituximab in Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia
Terminated
Pomalidomide is a newly discovered drug that may stop cancer cells from growing abnormally. Pomalidomide may also stimulate the immune system to fight the cancer cells and possibly improve the effectiveness of dexamethasone and rituximab to fight the Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia (WM) cancer cells. This drug have been used in multiple myeloma and information from these other research studies suggests that Pomalidomide may help to reduce or prevent the growth of cancer cells.

Ropivacaine Block Alone or With Perineural or Systemic Dexamethasone for Pain in Shoulder Surgery
Completed
Pre-operative perineural injection of dexamethasone mixed with local anesthetic in peripheral nerve blockade for orthopedic surgery has been shown to prolong the length of analgesia, improve visual analog pain scores, decrease post-operative opioid use, and decrease post-operative nausea. No study has been published to determine if this effect is a result of systemic absorption of dexamethasone or is a local effect of the drug on neuronal activity at the injection site. This study is a prospecti... Read More
