Cystic Fibrosis (CF) related diabetes (CFRD) is a unique form of diabetes mellitus, different from type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The diagnosis of CFRD is associated with a decline in pulmonary function, decreased nutritional status, and increased mortality. CFRD is extremely common in people with CF, occurring in approximately 40-50% of adults with CF. Impaired glucose tolerance or dysglycemia is also very common in CF. It is standard of care to screen for CFRD annually from the age of 10 years with a two-hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) with 75 g dextrose. The gold standard screening for CFRD is the OGTT which is problematic as it is time consuming for patient and staff and adherence to annual screening is low among CF centers. Survival has improved dramatically with the advent of CFTR modulators and it is presumed that the incidence of CFRD will increase with increased life expectancy. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has developed the oldest disease specific patient registry, consisting of approximately 35000 patients, so there is vast historical information available on individual patients and larger datasets on the CF community as a whole. Based on the 2021 CFF patient registry data, the current life expectancy for CF patients born between 2017 and 2021 is 53 years - a 15 year increase from a decade ago. Read Less

This study proposes a three-arm randomized-controlled trial (RCT) that evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of combining a mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) and open-label placebo (OLP) treatment for individuals with chronic pain. Individuals with chronic pain will be recruited to participate in an 8-week trial, with a subsequent 3-month post-treatment follow-up. The purpose of this prospective single-center, blinded\*, randomized, proof-of-concept study is to determine whether OnabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX®) injections will change the level of stress perceived by generally healthy adult female participants. It is hypothesized that BOTOX® injections will be associated with decreases in perceived stress levels, measured by scores on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaire. The primary outcome measure is a chronological decrease in PSS scores between any two points of the study period. Comparison of the placebo- and BOTOX®-treated participant scores will either support or disprove the study hypothesis. Qualified participants who meet the study requirements, including a one-time completion of basic laboratory testing before treatment. Individuals who operate in cold weather are at risk of developing cold injuries, for example, frostbite. They also often experience a loss of hand function and joint mobility due to a decrease in skin temperature and blood flow. In addition, the risk of getting a cold injury is higher in the Black population compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Increases in oxidant compounds can cause the blood vessels in the skin to narrow and decrease skin temperature in the cold. However, it is unknown whether the higher risk of cold injury in Black individuals is because of a greater amount of oxidant compounds in the blood vessels. The purpose of this research is to see if an antioxidant supplement called MitoQ can help to improve skin temperature and blood flow in the cold and if the improvement is greater in Black individuals.
