Flavanols are compounds present in plants, including apples, berries, peaches, cocoa-derived products and certain beverages like tea. Following intake, they are absorbed and broken down into smaller compounds called 'metabolites'. Some of these metabolites are excreted in urine. In this study, we hope to collect urine and examine the metabolites to learn more about the types and amounts of flavanols that people are consuming as part of their usual diet. Read Less

The goal of this clinical trial is to find out which approach works better in getting more of the friends and connections of Latino adults get vaccinated against COVID-19. The main questions this study aims to answer are: 1. Can teaching people to use motivational interviewing help more friends and connections of Latino adults get the COVID-19 vaccine compared to just giving information about the vaccine? 2. What are the things that make it easier or harder for Latinos and networks to get the COVID-19 vaccine? 3. How does this intervention work in practice so that it can be made available to more people in the future The researchers will compare the vaccine rates of the friends and connections of Latinos who have been trained in motivational interviewing with those who have only been given information about the COVID-19 vaccine. Single-center, randomized study will enroll 50 subjects who are scheduled for 1-3 level posterior laminectomy \& fusion. Study participants who are eligible for the posterior lumbar laminectomy and fusion procedure will be scheduled and also consented as a part of the study. Effective training requires repeated opportunities for skills practice with performance-based feedback, which is challenging to provide at scale. This research study focuses on developing an AI-based, coding and feedback tool ("LyssnCrisis") for implementation in a nationally utilized crisis call center, training counselors (call-takers) in suicide risk assessment skills, and evaluating LyssnCrisis to improve services and client outcomes. This research study's goal is to maximize the human capacity of call-takers to help assess their callers for risk of suicidality, and thus, a core aspect of the current research is developing a novel training process that supports human call-taker capacities. Fifteen female study participants will be enrolled in a randomized crossover study to measure fractional and total zinc and iron absorption from four common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties with varying phytate and polyphenolic contents. Phytate, the storage form of phosphorus in plants, and polyphenols, which contribute to the varied colors of common beans, are natural components of the beans and can reduce zinc and iron bioavailability from these foods. High standards and self-discipline are prized in military culture, but drawbacks of overcontrol are often ignored. Overcontrol is characterized by over-regulated behavior and cognitive rigidity, driven by an intense need for perfection and control. It is frequently observed in people with obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum disorders, especially OC Personality Disorder (OCPD). Their inclination to set high expectations for others can strain social bonds. When grappling with mental health challenges, overcontrolled individuals often do so with limited social support, and as a result, tend to be at greater risk of developing more severe mental health symptoms, or suicidal thoughts and behaviors, over time. New treatments are needed to improve social functioning in these vulnerable Veterans. Adding brain stimulation to psychotherapy is one method that might speed learning of social skills discussed in therapy. However, before this technology can be developed and tested more broadly, the investigators must make sure that the methods used to measure social functioning and related brain circuits are acceptable to most potential patients and can be used consistently. In this pilot project, the investigators aim to recruit trauma-exposed Veterans with overcontrolled traits and study the feasibility and acceptability of: 1. Our recruitment strategy and social functioning and mental health symptom assessments 2. A three-session, weekly fMRI protocol. 3. A three-week online protocol for remote monitoring of social and emotional functioning. Read Less

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic reversible competitive inhibitor to plasminogen lysine receptor, which prevents plasmin formation and stabilizes the fibrin matrix, thus reducing bleeding. While recent studies have demonstrated the antifibrinolytic benefits of TXA in obstetric and gynecologic conditions, traumatic hemorrhage, cardiac surgery, total knee arthroplasty, and more, there is a paucity of clinical data on TXA use in plastic surgery. Transgender Veterans (trans Vets) frequently experience gender dysphoria or distress related to discord between their gender identity and birth sex. Gender-affirming treatments (GATs) are medically necessary treatments to reduce gender dysphoria. However, not much is known about the barriers and facilitators that influence GAT access and receipt in VA and VA Community Care (CC), among trans Vets who desire GATs. The goals of this mixed-methods study are to determine which GATs trans Vets receive and in which setting, identify barriers and facilitators associated with desired GAT receipt in VA and CC, how barriers and facilitators influence GAT access and desire, and how to improve GAT access in VA and CC. In partnership with the Stakeholder Advisory Group, the investigators will develop patient-centered implementation strategies to address barriers and enhance facilitators to GAT access. The proposed study will position us to deploy these strategies in a follow-up study to mitigate barriers, improve GAT access in VA and CC, and promote trans health equity. Read Less

This pilot study will evaluate the therapeutic potential of psilocybin in people with Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). This study will examine the impact of psilocybin treatment on cannabis use and related variables in 12 people with CUD. This is an open-label proof-of-concept trial in which participants will complete a 12-week course of study treatment including two psilocybin sessions with psychological support, and follow-up assessments 3 and 6 months after the first psilocybin session.
