In Canada, the incidence of esophageal cancer has been increasing over time, while surgical standards for esophageal resections have remained unchanged. Currently, the standard of surgical care for this cancer is Open Transthoracic Esophagectomy (OTE), a highly morbid operation that is associated with a complication rate of 60-80%, and a recovery period of many months. While Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy (MIE) has been developed it has not been adopted because it is highly complex, technically demanding, and has a longer operative time than OTE. With the advent of robotic platforms, Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy (RAMIE) has recently emerged as a novel minimally invasive alternative to OTE. RAMIE utilizes the DaVinci Xi robotic surgical platform which offers superior dexterity, 3D-vision, and wristed surgical equipment. To date, case reports and small case series have demonstrated the safety of RAMIE, however it has not been performed yet in Canada, and there has been no randomized trial that has compared RAMIE to OTE. The study will look at the impact of the potassium content in fruits and vegetables, on serum potassium concentrations in people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) using a randomized crossover design. Participants will receive home delivery of fruit and vegetables with either higher or lower potassium content in a random order. Clinical chemistry markers from blood and urine samples, blood pressure, physical functioning and health related quality of life will be assessed throughout the duration of the trial. This study will also measure their physical functioning, using a chair stand test. The results of this study could change the dietary recommendations for people with CKD related to potassium. The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate how taking Resistant Potato Starch affects the gut microbiota compared to a placebo, in healthy adults. Over a 4-week period, participants will provide stool samples for analysis to detect any changes in gut bacteria. They will also record daily information in a diary about their stool consistency, frequency, digestive symptoms, and overall quality of life. Read Less

Spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) accounts for approximately 10-15% of all strokes but stands for 50% of stroke-related morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of all patients with ICH have a decreased level of consciousness at hospital admission. Despite this, intensive care and neurosurgical interventions are uncommon. A study conducted in low- and middle-income countries has demonstrated a beneficial effect of a treatment package consisting of early intensive blood pressure lowering, as well as the treatment of pyrexia and elevated blood glucose levels. The I-CATCHER team is now planning to conduct a similar study in Sweden and Australia, as well as in other high-income countries. The study has a clear focus on implementation, aiming to improve treatment and prognosis for patients with ICH within a few years. The purpose of I-CATCHER is to investigate whether a structured treatment package (Care Bundle) improves 3-month prognosis in patients with spontaneous ICH compared to standard care. Read Less

Haskap berries are rich in cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), which has been shown in vitro to enhance endothelial function. Previous clinical studies suggest haskap berry supplementation may improve cognition, mood, blood pressure, and athletic performance, but research is limited. This trial aims to contribute to the growing body of evidence on the effects of haskap berry supplementation. The trial is a 2-period, randomized, double-blinded, cross-over design lasting 16 weeks. During the first period (weeks 0-6), participants will receive either haskap berry powder or a control powder. A 4-week washout period follows (weeks 7-10), where no powder is consumed. Asthma is a common inflammatory respiratory disease affecting 11% of Canadians, but its diagnosis remains challenging, leading to delays in treatment or overtreatment. Spirometry with a reversibility test and bronchial provocation testing (BPT), considered the gold standard, are the reference diagnostic methods. However, access to BPT is limited as it is performed in hospital settings. Type 2 inflammation biomarkers, the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and blood eosinophils (EOS), represent a potential alternative. In addition to their prognostic and theragnostic value, these markers predict a good response to inhaled corticosteroids in individuals aged ≥ 6 years with asthma. However, their use remains restricted to pulmonologists in specialized clinics and is not recommended as a diagnostic tool in Quebec. Despite studies demonstrating their diagnostic value in specialized settings, these tests remain underexplored in primary care and insufficiently studied in children under 12 years. There is a need to identify strategies that improve the conduct of clinical trials involving family members of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate recruitment and retention strategies for clinical trials involving family members of ICU patients. 4 strategies (2 recruitment and 2 retention) will be tested. Investigators will integrate the strategies into three existing studies that involve family members of ICU patients. Participants will be randomized using a 2x2 factorial design. The co-primary outcomes are recruitment percentage (participants enrolled/participants approached) and retention percentage (participants completing follow-up/participants enrolled). Read Less

Spine fractures are the most common fracture due to osteoporosis. They happen during falls or activities of daily life, like bending to tie shoes. Fractures of the spine can result in pain, which can sometimes last for a long time. Spine fractures can affect breathing, appetite, digestion, and mobility, and can restrict or modify people's work or daily activities. There are no standard rehabilitation programs after spine fracture, and patients often have to pay for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation can be hard to access, especially in rural or remote locations. It can be hard to find health care or rehabilitation providers who specialize in treating spine fractures. After reviewing research and consulting patients and health care providers to understand their experiences with spine fracture rehabilitation, the research team developed a toolkit for a virtual rehabilitation program for people with spine fractures, called VIVA. The research team wants to submit a grant for a clinical trial to implement VIVA in five provinces and determine if VIVA reduces pain and improves physical functioning and quality of life, and if the benefits outweigh the costs. Before this, the team proposes to do a pilot study to test how feasible it is to do a study of VIVA in three provinces. Read Less
