Hepatic Hilar Nerve Block Versus Sham in Pain Control During Liver Ablation and TACE Procedures
Recruiting
This study is aimed at assessing the effectiveness of a novel liver specific nerve block in improving pain control during painful liver interventional radiology procedures including liver tumoral ablation and trans arterial chemoembolization, two procedures aimed at controlling liver tumors, but that can be associated with significant pain. This novel hepatic specific nerve block was designed by us and initial retrospective results suggests it might help in controlling such liver procedural deri... Read More

Smart Discharges for Mom & Baby
Recruiting
This study aims to build a predictive algorithm that identifies mother-newborn dyads most at risk of death or complications in the 6 weeks after birth. The investigators will conduct a multi-site cohort study with 7,000 dyads in Uganda and engage with local stakeholders (e.g., patients, healthcare workers, and health policy-makers) to develop an evidence-based bundle of interventions that address key practice gaps and the critical factors leading to death and complications in these dyads. In the... Read More

Effects of Teriparatide (PTH) on Bone in Men and Women With Osteoporosis
Recruiting
Teriparatide (PTH) is the only bone formation therapy that has been approved for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in Canada. Osteoporosis is currently diagnosed using a bone mineral density (BMD) scan, which measures the amount of mineral (calcium etc) in bones (the higher the amount of mineral, the lower the fracture risk). Although BMD is linked to bone strength and is used to measure fracture risk, it does not give information on bone structure (called bone geometry) which can als... Read More

Evaluation of IVA (SE Femur Scans) to Identify Incomplete AFFs
Recruiting
DXA scanners are routinely used to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk in osteoporosis patients. They provide detailed bone imaging in a low radiation setting. Hologic manufactures scanners that are able to perform high definition instant vertebral fracture assessment (HD-IVA) used to screen at-risk patients for asymptomatic spine fractures instantly and reliably at the same time they are having their yearly BMD. We wish to investigate whether this same proven technology (HD-IVA... Read More

A Longitudinal Examination of Unpaid Caregivers of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Survivors in Nova Scotia
Recruiting
The purpose of the present study is to follow unpaid caregivers of ABI survivors in Nova Scotia over time to learn more about their experiences. The study is funded by the Government of Nova Scotia (i.e. Department of Health and Wellness). The present longitudinal cohort study will help increase knowledge about ABI caregivers at a provincial level. Findings will also be used in developing future interventions to help caregivers in this population.
The goals of the research study are:
1. To und... Read More

An E-health Letter Intervention for Caregivers
Recruiting
The purpose of the present study is to conduct a two-arm Randomized Control Trial (RCT) comparing individuals receiving the 90Second Caregiver health letter, with a usual care (routine care received by caregivers) control group.
The goals of the present study are:
* To evaluate the effectiveness of the 90Second Caregiver health letter in improving caregiver's self-efficacy (primary outcome), savouring, and quality of life (secondary outcomes).
* To evaluate the effectiveness of the 90Second Ca... Read More

Cooling During Exercise in the Heat
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to compare the effectiveness of upper-body surface cooling with whole-body surface cooling on exercise performance while wearing firefighter clothing in the heat. The main question it aims to answer is:
• which cooling protocol best prevents an increase in core temperature during exercise in the heat?
Participants will be asked to participate three times in a 60-minute exposure (to 40 degrees C, 40% relative humidity) in which they conduct three work/rest per... Read More

My Cardiac Recovery (MyCaRe): A Pilot RCT.
Recruiting
MyCardiacRecovery (MyCaRe) is an interactive platform that includes a standardized educational format and interactive tracking (wound healing and activity progression using photo capabilities and Fitbit Inspire 2 accelerometer) support during the first 6 to 8 weeks post hospital discharge. This android application will help patients and family navigate their way through the continuum of care by providing an: a) integrated link between acute care and outpatient cardiac rehab (CR) for efficient co... Biology of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy
Recruiting
The investigators are collecting genetic information through blood samples as well as clinical and EEG data from over 1000 people with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) across the UK, Europe and North America. This study will draw on both existing and new samples from JME patients. These will be compared to anonymised data from samples for 2000 controls. The goal of this study is to find the genetic cause of JME. Finding the cause will help create better treatments for JME, as well as improve pa... Read More

GRID Therapy as Palliative Radiation for Patients With Advanced and Symptomatic Tumors
Recruiting
Palliative radiation therapy represents 40% of the on-going radiation at the Jewish General Hospital. In a traditional palliative radiation treatment to bulky or radioresistant tumors, radiotherapy schema varies from 24 to 30 Gys given in 3 to 10 fractions, depending on the tumor size, tumor location and tumor pathology. However, for many patients this treatment involves considerable toxicity, travel and time spent at the hospital. Spatially fractionated radiation (SFR) is an alternative techniq... Read More

A Home-based Rehabilitation in ARSACS
Recruiting
48 participants (24 women and 24 men) with autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) will participate in 2 phases : control phase (12-week usual care) and intervention phase (12-week home-based rehabilitation program). The participants will be evaluated at baseline, week 12 (end of control phase) and week 24 (end of intervention phase) to quantify the effects of an individualized home-based rehabilitation program. Comparing Dual Mini-fragment Plating to Single Precontoured Plating of Acute Midshaft Clavicle Fractures Trial
Recruiting
The rate of surgical fixation of fractures of the collarbone (i.e., midshaft clavicle) has exponentially increased in recent years; however, the rate of repeat procedures for removal of these implants (i.e., plates) due to irritation remains high. Despite technological advances in implant design, nearly one in four patients with a surgically fixed collarbone ultimately undergoes removal of their implant. More recently, there has been a growing body of literature demonstrating the effectiveness o... Read More
