Probiotic (LGG) for Veterans With PTSD
Recruiting
Exaggerated inflammation in the body and brain is thought to play a role in the vulnerability to and aggravation and perpetuation of adverse consequences among those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The proposed study begins the process of investigating the use of a natural immunoregulatory/anti-inflammatory probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG; ATCC53103), to treat chronic symptoms associated with PTSD among Veterans. By looking at the impact of probiotic supplementation on biol... Read More

Dairy Fat and Fermentation Study
Recruiting
The purpose of the study is to compare the effect of consuming full-fat (regular) and fat-free (skim) milk, as well as full-fat and fat-free yogurt (a fermented dairy product), on microorganisms in your gut as well as the products produced by the gut microbes. We will also determine whether consuming these dairy products affects risk factors for heart disease. The findings of the study will help us determine if heart disease risk factors are modified by the fat content and fermentation of milk. Understanding Dose Related Effects of Strawberry
Recruiting
The proposed research is designed to extend previous research findings building on the knowledge of strawberries as fruits that support a healthy immune and vascular system. The proposed research leverages a recently funded proposal by the USDA to study in greater depth inflammation, glucoregulation and oxidative stress defense and their relation to improving endothelial function and insulin sensitivity. Before and after strawberry intake, blood samples will be collected for monocyte (immune ce... Read More

Salt-Sensitivity and Immunity Cell Activation
Recruiting
Salt-sensitive hypertension affects nearly 50% of the hypertensive and 25% of the normotensive population, and strong evidence indicates that reducing salt intake decreases blood pressure and cardiovascular events. The precise mechanisms of how dietary salt contributes to blood pressure elevation, renal injury, and cardiovascular disease remains unclear. Our data indicated that monocytes exhibit salt sensitivity, and the investigators hypothesize that of salt sensitivity of these and similar imm... Read More

WHNRC (Western Human Nutrition Research Center) Fiber Intervention Study
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to determine if adding dietary fiber, such as inulin, to a diet that does not have enough fiber would raise the levels of potentially beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, in the gut. There is evidence to suggest that these microbes can affect gut health and immune response, including to vaccines. The investigators will examine how inulin in the diet (compared to the maltodextrin control) (1) causes changes in the composition and function of the gut microbes,... Read More

Partners in Children's Health (CSN): A Randomized Trial of an Attachment Based Intervention
Recruiting
The goal of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the impacts of an attachment-based intervention (Attachment Biobehavioral Catch-Up (ABC) and Home Book-of-the-Week (HBOW) program on emerging health outcomes (i.e., common childhood illnesses, body mass index, and sleep) in low-income Latino children (N=260; 9 months at enrollment). It is hypothesized that children randomized to ABC will have better health outcomes in comparison to the HBOW control group.

Postprandial Monocyte Study
Recruiting
The purpose of this research is to determine the role of a type of immune cell in blood, called a non-classical monocytes (NCMs), following consumption of a high-fat meal. Previous studies have found that monocytes are important for blood vessel health. In this study, two different high-fat meals will be used to study the effect of different types of dietary fat on postprandial NCMs. The investigators will characterize NCMs in both fasting conditions and following consumption of two different hi...
